Setting tire pressures?

Hi all,
Its that time of year for me in Northern California that tire pressures start to go all weird on me. Things are cooling down quite dramatically and its far from cold, but we are seeing 20C / 68F during the day and 7C / 44F at night. Nothing dramatic, but its this time of year that I struggle to get tire pressures correct. I had exactly the same problem with my old 958 Cayenne, so suspect its similar here, but how does everyone set their tire pressures?
I believe you are supposed to set them while cold, knowing that they will rise when warm, but just tried it now and (have the 21" wheels so its 36 PSI front and 39 PSI rear) and set the rears to 39 with them hitting 42 in 10 minutes. Fronts were low at 33 and then got to 35 in the same time period. Was just a short experiment, but wondering what everyone thinks?
Do you just set them when cold and leave them? Or should I set them a little lower knowing that they will warm up pretty quickly to get to the suggested temp anyway? Shouldnt really matter, but this was all triggered by the tire pressure warning alarm going off on one morning. It gets annoying.
Any suggestions? How do you set them?

Set them cold and don't worry about the increase.
