Default Wheel locks

My mechanic recommended getting rid of the locks, because too often the key/adapter gets lost or misplaced.

I have always had them on my cars, but I can see the issue if you need to change a tire and can’t find the key.

what do you think? Thx

The only person locking lugs keep from getting your wheels off is you

Replace them with regular ones. Unless you live or park in a high crime area you'll be fine and you have insurance too.

A couple decades ago I used to use them too and never had an issue, but don't any longer, even on the cars with $7-$8k wheel sets.

I dumped them on my BMW. They were the type that required a special socket which often slipped. I even had to get towed once because I couldn’t change my tire. Way more trouble than they are worth.

I tell you a story about said key lug nuts. Had my old 6 gt3 stripped and ready for track alignment for track day weekend. Trailered from San Francisco to Milpitas(original location) unloaded and Tony asked me “You got the key lug nut?”…….. you know the rest of the story from there on so I’m all in on no freaking key locks!!!!!

I use mine and keep the key in the slot next to the spare. Never had a problem with using it.

There is a fixed number of "keys" (socket inserts) for the Macan wheel locks. It is not rocket science for a dealer to replace a lost one.

Your socket insert has a number on it - save that value somewhere - just in case...

There is a 20 piece Porsche set available online... ~$100+

getting a set of high quality wheel lock is the key, I have McGard wheel lock on my Mercedes and they works fantastically for over 50K miles, never have problem getting them on or off,
and you can order as many key as you like, I have one in the car and one in the garage at all time.
with the increase crime rate during COVID I wouldn't risk my $6K+ set of wheel over a $35 part.

$6ooo dollar wheels with the wheel lock key, in the trunk or glove box. One rock and a 1ooo dollar side glass and the thieves have your wheels.
I will support the above statement of “the only person wheels locks inconvenience is the owner”.
First thing I take off any of my new to me cars. plus really, they are taking the whole car.
It is snow tire season here soon. I help change at least 12 other cars, not from my house.
One of those people/freeloaders won’t be able to find their key for their wheel lock. One quick hammer 🔨 to a reverse nut remover, and I’ll get said lock off.
Five tiny bite marks on the side of the bolt.
And I’m a good guy. I’m sure the bad guys have way more sophisticated equipment.
I got my kit on sale….

Yep, a Gator grip pin socket and battery impact will soon then right off.

I'd be more pissed about them dropping the car back onto the $20k PCCB rotors than I would be about losing the wheels.

Just buy some extras on Ebay. There's a number stamped inside, like 87, and a guy on EBay sells them. Like 2 for $40
