This unfortunately was not what happened - the parking sensors did not get activated. It happened again a few months after I posted this and no one was around me. It looks like it happens on slight inclines. Found other people who had the same issue:https://www.macanforum.com/threads/m...ck-back.93161/

To the OP, did both Macans have surround view and did you also get a warning tone from the parking sensors?

Yes, the car actually went backwards - I slammed on the brakes hoping it would reset and carefully tried again and it still went backwards (still on D). Had to put in Park then back to Drive to move forward/reset it.

To anyone reading this having the same problem, turning off the start-stop option helped; it hasn’t happened since. Dealer is aware and submitted all the links where people reported it to their shop foreman. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like there’s a solution other than turning off the start-stop option - which is annoying anyway so I had no issues deactivating it.
