I've had my 2019 Macan Base now for a week. And I am ecstatic.
This is my first ever Porsche. I've been a performance junkie for some time now, commuted in a Camaro ZL1 580 hp car for 3 years, then a 2016 Z51 460 hp Corvette the past 3 years - both manuals. The camaro was a darned good car. The corvette was an awesome car.
But I finally came to my senses, driving almost 20K miles a year, that I needed something - just - bigger, with more safety options like blind spot and lane assist. And while I loved all those years driving in a manual, NorCal traffic has made me understand that days of enjoying a manual daily driver here are finally gone.
I was so depressed when I started test driving cars. I drove Audi's, BMW's, Lexus's and Mercedes - SUVs and some of the lower end performance models of each. There was just not a one that I drove that could get me out of the lull I went into as soon as I started driving. Ha - I also drove a Toyota RAV4, and think I scared the tar out of the poor salesman driving with me. That car couldn't keep up with me, every little push made it feel like it was driving it way beyond its limits!
I was close to conceding to trade in my manual on another vette but with an automatic transmission, when I decided to check out a Porsche SUV. I first drove a Macan S. As soon as I took my first turn it was love. The car drove like a dream - I was awake! In wanting to keep costs down, I decided to try out a Base to see if I could live without the S, and found one in Volcanic Grey with the Premium Plus package with garnet red leather seats. I could not believe how well the base drove. Yes, I could not only live with it, but also be very happy with it!
Fit and finish of the car is, yes as you'd expect, way better than what I was used to. I still keep rubbing my hands over the steering wheel and seats, just not believing the quality of the leather. Everything I touch feels amazing - every ***, every material. And now I finally have a vehicle that can fit the canine portion of the family as well.
Bottom line, I'm pretty dumbfounded that you can get this much car and stay around $60K (new) if you need to. There are lots of additional items I would have loved to have added, but even without, this is a car I think I'll be keeping for a long time.
Present:
2019 Macan - Volcano Grey w Garnet Red Leather 2016 C7 Z06/Z07 Corvette - Black
2013 Chevrolet Dually 3500 - White
1969 Corvette L46 - Lemans Blue
Congratulations on the new Macan. Even better that you are so impressed with it. I bought a 2017 new and it did split duty between two of us. We put roughly 26,000 miles on it and they were all trouble free and enjoyable. It's a great vehicle. Like you, we bought the base Macan with several options and an MSRP around ~62k. I felt the same way about the amount of car/quality for the money.
It drives great, handles well, and offers a ton of luxury for the price. Very enjoyable car.
Congrats on the new Macan, and welcome to Porsche!
I too am a LONG time GM performance fan and owner many times over. Still love GM performance, but have been really enjoying Porsche for a few years now.
I went from a 2007 BMW 530xi T...( and before that a 2006 BMW X 5, a 99 528xiT and before that a 94 525xiT, see a pattern?) to a leased 2019 Macan S....(If BMW was still importing the Tourings, they stopped at 2010, I would be driving a later BMW...Big mistake BMWNA)
I was not ready to do this but the Mrs. wanted me to have a new car...
I'm a ling time BMW guy and 911 guy, and NEVER buy new cars...(she has a 2018 M.B C 300 cab...bought 1 year old with 6,000 miles)
I always felt that the 5 series BMW's were solid and safe...and they were !
Now with the Macan, it has the same solid feel, (6 weeks old), and i'm finding that it has a really nice road feel, more 911 than SUV.....I think I like it...(whips around better than the BMW, and the BMW was "station wagon"...lower c/g....
Like dak911, I had a 5 series wagon, and mine had a 6 speed manual. I loved that car, but it was a bit underpowered. A few cars later I ended up with both a 991.1 911 and a Macan Turbo in my garage. There were days when I'd take the Macan rather than the 911 just because I liked driving the Macan so much. Now, where are those pics, harmony?
Glad to hear of others' stories of comparing the Macan S to the base Macan before finally buying a base Macan -- as I did this year. I find that when I need a little extra acceleration "oomph", pushing the "Sport" button does just fine in the base Macan. And I got my 2019 base Macan new for close to USD $54k; the extra cost couldn't justify the modest extra acceleration ability in the Macan S, for me. (My background includes owning two Panameras. And I, at first, refused to even consider the base Macan, focussing for a long time on the Macan S only for many months. I also debated getting a "tune" for my base Macan but decided not to invest the money because the factory car is fine for me, and I didn't want to risk fooling with the Porsche warranty in any way.)
APR sells the soft ware for $699 w/o warranty, and $1,099 with a powertrain warranty. Service director where I bought the car (and had the tune installed) says APR will back up any warranty claim on the powertrain caused by their software. There is a VW dealership near me that does this APR tune on many 2.0 engines. In fact, a local Audi dealer sends his customers to the VW dealership to get the tune, as they are not an authorized seller/installer. When you get bored with the stock & sport modes that come with the car, think about this upgrade. In "Sport" mode it is very quick.
Go to that website and check out the installers near you for more information.
