I dunno, Katie. Maybe we were too busy learning more important things, I dunno. But your reference to 'mammy, mammy' for some reason rang a bell. I have never seen one of those black face performances that I recall, but for some reason when you wrote that catch phrase, my brain immediately associated it with laughter. Maybe I just simply forgot?

Uncle Remus stories were written by Joel Chandler Harris who lived here in Atlanta. When I was in grade school we took field trips to the house he lived and wrote in. I don't have any idea if the house is still there or not.

I'm not really sure that I was referencing Al Jolson...."Yassah, massah" is definitely more of the sterotype of characters that were played by black actors and actresses (Gone with the Wind, Song of the South, etc.). Al Jolson did blackface comedy--he was white, and he pretended to be a black man on stage, playing up the stereotypes. These shows were called Minstrel shows, and were popular, although they certainly reinforced racist stereotypes.

Wikipedia has a pretty good article on Minstrel shows and blackface.
