Doesn't look like I'll make any other races this year, but I hope you have great success at RA in the pro series. Those Formula Mazdas (Star Mazdas? BTW - you missed my race on Sunday. Lap 6 some backmarker put me in the guardrail on the front straight. Don't ask what I was doing back there in the first place. Anyway, he says he thought I went off at the top of the hill since he never saw me again until he hit me under the start finish flagger stand. I guess that's why he's a backmarker. Either that or his mirrors are broken. Oh well, live and learn. You can see it all right here, just please right click and save as. My best to your dad and good luck.

I do want to thank Mark D. for letting me taking out his SRF a while back. It was a lot of fun. I really did appreciate it, and I still do. I guess he didn't know any better back then.

"No, cruising around 5/10th would've gave me a lot of satisfaction"
Ummm ... if you can't afford the car you don't deserve the satisfaction that comes with it. This makes you an arrogant idiot who likes to use other peoples hard earned money who DO deserve the satisfaction. You need to focus all your energy into some kind of career so you can buy your own car. You're a TOOL!

Interesting comments on another board about Frank. Dario you are 100% correct. Frank obviously has a "ME" complex.

The SRF is a perfect TrackSlut car - fairly easy to drive, built like a tank, doesn't get hurt with excursions into the dirt and is cheap - $20K is you wrote if off completely. I am not worried about the need to repair it or diminished value - it has been wrecked a few times in it's life - that is what happens to cars that live on the track. When I took that to track events, I pretty much offered it to any instructor or advanced student that wanted to give it a try. I would still do that - it is a great experience to drive a purpose built race car, especially one that can take abuse. Now the Radical is a whole different world (I am now getting ready to use tranmission #2).
The SRF and my attitude, however, has nothing to do with my attitude about student's cars or how I would treat them. Personally, I do not like to drive student's (or instuctor's) cars and almost always manage to avoid it, except for Ducks-in-a-row. I do not make driving other peoples cars part of my coaching process, nor do I see it as a perk.

...But freakin difficult little mothers to drive FAST. Piloted these little boats at the Regional, Nationall and Pro level...they take a skilled piloti to run mid-pack, and running at the front in one is an exercise in "dancing with the devil".

Here are the reasons I instruct.
1. In hopes that if I show a student car control skills at incremental progression towards the limits, that student will put some tools in their toolbox that will enable them to save their own life, the lives of loved ones, or the lives of others.
2. Seat time to keep me sharper for racing and daily driving.
I think this was a good thread as it sparked many good points. Sorry about the dogpiling on GR though, even though I have never met him, I am sure he is probably a great guy. As I reflect on the issues raised I have decided that for me, it means I will never ask to drive another's car and will only take students out in mine if they want some help with the line, technique etc... I believe that all the talented Instructors and driver's I know can feel exactly what the students car is doing just from the passenger seat and can give input accordingly. Perhaps every region should just keep a Spec Miata around for multiple users...? I just dont think I could feel ok after damaging another's car. Even if that means the worn out clutch goes while I am at the wheel. While it may be no fault of mine, I would still feel obliged to help with the repair... My car I can deal with damage under the "that's racing" rule.

Mike,
I just finished "The Millionaire Next Door" on a flight home from SF yesterday (TG, I didn't run into Frank while out there). As a dyed-in-the-wool Texan, I was thinking that your quoted expression fit him rather nicely.
Looking forward to RA this weekend.
