Tire repair vs replacment...help please.
So today I picked up a rather large construction screw in my driver's side rear tire. The tire is holding pressure but obviously I need to either get the tire repaired or replaced. Car only has 1,500 miles and I have a pending track day on October 7th. I purchased a Preferred Tire and Wheel Plan at the time of vehicle purchase which pays for "costs associated with the repair, or if not repairable, the replacement of any tire that is damaged due to contact with a road hazard." First, would the tire be safe on the track with a plug repair assuming it holds pressure fine? Second, any suggestions for dealing with the service agreement provider as I am assuming they will definitely just want to have the tire repaired as opposed to replaced.

Might not even be punctured if you're not losing any air pressure.

I'm sure you'll get all different opinions, but if it were my tire, I wouldn't trust a patch or plug on track. I'm sure plenty of people have done it, but that doesn't mean it is the smartest idea.

One of my tires got one of these in this weekend too, but mine's near the sidewall so the tire's done. Waiting for quotes from the dealer when they open before I go order a full set of Pilot Super Sports. On thicker street tires like PSSs I'd just patch, but with MSC2s and less tread in them, even mushroom plugging them is risky knowing how much they go up and down with heat cycles in pressure.

Driving on a track with a plugged or patched tire has to be a personal judgement. I've done it.
I've never had a wheel/tire insurance program but presume you got it through the dealer at purchase? If so I'd take it to them and request they replace the tire. The Porsche manual recommends replacing damaged tires- see page 190.

I would be pushing for a new tire since you have insurance. If the agent balks make them aware of the speed rating on the tire. Also check to see if the agent will accept responsibility if the patch fails.

This topic is like the best motor oil or best religion. Personally I've used plugs on track and never a issue. The patch plug from the inside is probably the best. If you can get your insurance to get you a new tire that would be my first choice..
