Overkill??
Love the Cayman platform and am considering a GT4 but I don't intend to track the car. Won't be a daily driver but will be my second car, my "fun" car!
Due you think this is overkill buying a car like this and not tracking it? Maybe I should go with a GTS, yes/no??
THNX guys!

It somewhat depends on exactly what generates your fun with the car. If there is a significant bit
about you imagining that what you're feeling is specifically about what you've read about the car,
then the GT4 is written and documented as a more performant car. But to the extent your fun
comes from what the car actually does, especially on public roads, the exciting capabilities of both
cars are much beyond what you will reasonably be doing, and the GTS is a wonderful car, and will
save you some serious money.

Some have suggested that the 987.2 Cayman R is the most fun of the Caymans for the road (better steering, smaller/lighter chassis and wheels/tires/brakes, etc...)
And if I didn't care about hardtop safety at the track, I'd also consider the 987.2 or 981 Spyders...

But OP, ^that. The GT4 will feel and sound more special, which to some is enough to make it worth it, but you'll also never come close to the full experience it can offer, so you're spending a fair amount of money to leave a lot of its fun potential and value untapped. The GTS doesn't have as much of the bling factor but will be more than you'll ever need on public roads and will likely be much cheaper used even though its cost new was surprisingly close to the GT4 -- plus it would make for a more comfortable overall ride (as long as you can still feel that your life is complete without LWBs
). I personally wouldn't be able to justify the total cost of ownership on a GT4 if I weren't tracking it frequently, and it seems most owners feel the same way considering that 80% of GT cars see track time, and I would bet a reasonable chunk of the remaining 20% are bubble wrapped as opposed to being frequent weekend cars.Or you could, you know, get a GT4 and change your plans about not tracking.
What's driving your intent not to track it, out of curiosity?
In response to "jphughan" with respect to "tracking", did that with a track machine 993 for many, many years. Now am in the twilight years (74 yr) and kind of lost the desire. However, I do love Porsche cars!!!
I drive mostly on the street and the reason I got the car was (in no particular order)
1. parking lot pimpin
2. envy co-workers
3. make the wife angry
4. mid-life/end-of-life crisis
5. make regular Cayman/Boxster owners look at me
6. make 911 owners feel inferior

There's so much hype and media coverage with the GT4 sometimes I think people forget the GTS/S models are really great cars. You can get the same pimped alcantara interior in the GTS plus some options that are sadly lacking for a street driven GT4 like parking camera, comfort access, and a even a decent audio system. For a street car I would choose a Spyder or a GTS over a GT4.....
I’ll chime and join the crowd:
If I wasn’t regularly taking my GT4 to the track, there’s no way I’d buy one. The coolness factor is definitely high in the GT4 just driving around town - you’ll get thumbs-up and questions from drivers that you won’t get in another car - but in every other way, the GTS or an S would be better.
Personally, for a really fun occasional driver, I wouldn’t go past the Cayman S - not even a GTS. I think the S has more than enough power and you’ll avoid paying for a bunch of options that you may or may not care about. I had a base Cayman before my GT4 and absolutely loved it. I actually regret selling it.

I too had a Cayman GTS. Great car, loved it.
Yes, if not tracking, the GTS was more enjoyable on the street - the PDK, PASM (if so equipped) is really an fun, and easy in and out (seats and driveways). No complaints.

That's the boat I'm in. I'm a first time Porsche owner and I would not have settled for less. Plus the GT4 won't have nearly the same depreciation as a GTS.
