Gt4 awesome at COTA but sad ending :(

Car was doing awesome all weekend even pulled double duty running 2 run groups by giving people rides. Not sure what happened but if you skip to 10 min you'll hear a loud fast buzzing noise appear around 7k right before I'm about to short shift to 3rd (i.e. did not shift). Then it was error code city! Found out later that some of the codes were camshaft and multiple cylinder misfire.
Good thing I was near the pits. Parked the car and shut it down and the car wouldn't start back up. Had car towed to dealer. I won't be able to sleep tonight
Any ideas what happened?

Anyways, I worry about tracking the GT4 for these reasons, so please let us know what the dealer says. I know McLaren still honors the warranty even if they know I'm on track - as long as I do the pre and post inspections with the dealers.

Sorry to hear. The 9A1 engine has overall been reliable since introduced in 09 and lots have been tracked, so a little surprising. But sometimes failures happen. Assume you didn't overrev it during the day? missed shift? Were you driving oem tires? What temps did you have? any warnings? Interested to hear the dealer diagnosis.

Car is stock engine wise besides fabspeed headers.

When I stopped into the dealer and talked to the service guy this AM we somehow got into the conversation where I ended up saying "you obviously know I track the car right?" (It has rubber marks from the track, 3.5 degrees of camber, pagid pads, OZ wheels, and most of all, it was towed from COTA). He responded, "that is not a problem". He acted like it was no big deal. It gave me some relief, but I guess i'll find out soon enough!

Good luck. Report back what the issue is when you get a chance.

To the OP, good luck and keep us posted. As long as the wrong gear wasn't engaged forcing an over rev, the rev limiter should prevent an over rev in that instance where he didn't cleanly engage the proper gear.

I read the manual back and forth and the warranty portion makes it pretty clear that the car is not covered if the car is being used in a track environment.

Just to clarify, I have put in about 4500 miles so far and not once have I "engaged" the wrong gear causing a material overrev. I may have missed a gear, but the gear was never engaged.
Dealer just called and they will have to take engine out today to investigate cams. Gt4 will have to be at the spa for at least a week. Will let everyone know asap.
