Default Inner hub caps

I was changing over to the winter wheel/tire setup on my wife's BMW 4 series today when I noticed something interesting--little black plastic inner hub covers that attach directly to the hub, underneath the factory wheels. In my 14 years changing wheels on 12 different cars (BMWs, Audis, Acuras, Porsche) I've never seen this before. It strikes me as a possible solution to the rusty hubs I've been sporting on my 991 that are visible through the open hub - no center cap design of my Forgeline GZ3R wheels that I use for street and track. The other solution would be to clean the hubs with a wire brush and hit them with rustproof paint, but I would be concerned that the paint layer, however thin, would make it difficult to get the wheels to seat on the hubs. The tolerances are quite tight.
Has anyone seen these little caps before, and would there be an aftermarket supplier for our cars?

If it were me, first Id take it off to see whats under it.
Then id probably break it trying to put it back on .
Then a trip to the dealer to buy a new one..
Then wait because its back ordered for 6 weeks..
Not fun having OCD...carl
