I guess I'm too efficient (or excessively lazy) - I press the sport plus button as soon as I get in the car to put it in sport and open the exhaust.

In the GT4 it opens up a new cooling loop using the front radiator. Coolant temps drop 20-30 degrees F almost immediately and oil temps slowly follow.

It will also enable the auto-blip on the transmission.

I can't say for sure if the behavior will be the same on the Boxster Spyder.

Even with the sport button off, I have noticed that it takes much longer for the oil to get up to temp on the GT4 than it does on the 991 GT3.

As far as break in goes, even on this thread there is wide variability on what every one does. I will put down money that no matter what method you choose, nobody will ever be able to prove that it made a difference in the long run. Do what makes you comfortable.

Exactly. It would have it to be a very very well controller experiment where long term engine health was looked at with two different break-in procedures. From the moment after the "break-in" the engines would have to be controlled for load, rpm, oil changes, environment, etc in the exact same manner and data logged over many years. Simply a lot of effort and cost.

There are a lot of opinions and a much smaller amount of facts.

I have no patience to drive like a Q Tip for 2000 miles. Hence my abreviated break in schedule. Besides who needs facts when we have opinions.

I wonder if the additional cooling is why sport mode isn't sticky like PASM is. I was thinking it'd be nice to have it stay on so one less thing to remember to poke when getting in the car. It's a car, not a plane -- I'm not going through a 50 step pre-drive checklist (barring track time).

As for break-in, I'm trying to stick with the AP method (5000rpm for first 500km, +500rpm / 200km after). No way could I stay under 4k rpm for 2000 miles, but I managed it for 400mi with a couple bursts to 5k. I used it as a daily driver for the first 3 weeks to get some mileage on it.

That is also an option.
This period gives me time to understand the car and build trust to all systems - especially to brakes. So for me step-by-step.

I am going to follow the manual and add an oil changes at 1000 & 2000 miles, and likely transmission fluid at 2k as well. I followed the directions with my GTR and that car ended up being "healthy" so I am sold on the concept and willing to wait, especially with a car I plan to keep.

Somewhat related question:
Does the car come with standard oil when new? If not what does it come with? I ask because I am contemplating oil change ASAP just to get a magnetic plug into the equation.

Haha, I just hit 5000rpm on the dot, or maybe a dot more...at 890 km. Close enough, as per AP.

I followed AP's break in and changed my oil and filter at about 1,100 miles. I plan to get an alignment done soon, I just haven't had the time to schedule the pick up/drop off.

My understanding is the engine cooling fans are on when in sport mode more than when not in sport mode.
