Bimmers are really sweet driving cars, very practical and feel quite sporty on the road. Used to be more tossable, but recently getting bigger/heavier, very powerful, and ponderous. 2 is effectively the old 3 series we loved... 3/4 is the old 5 series form factor...current M5 is total rhino/battleship...

They are working on reducing weight but from quite a high baseline, so even with some weight reduction, they are still porkers when one gets used to a 3100-3200 pound Porsche. Furthermore, they need to achieve certain price points to achieve desired sales volumes so it is hard (expensive) to significantly reduce weight. In that respect they are a prisoner of their own success.

Great for everyday use, good for canyon runs, and as Chris said, totally fish out of water on track, at least in stock form, for experienced trackers. Can't stop well enough, can't turn sharply...

Feels a bit compromised, especially the seats. But for the price, I guess you can't be too picky. And as with the GT4, the M2 has to fit in the range and not challenge the M4 too much.

My wife dailys an m235 and it's a really good car. Only nit is the tiny gas tank. She likes it. It's fast little car has *****. Doesn't feel anything as good as a Porsche though driving wise. Doesn't feel as heavy as it is.

If I don't like DD'ing my GT4, I think the M2 would do nicely. My current DD is an E92 M3 and the one time I took it to the track, even with pads and fluid, it nearly melted.

Agreed. The E46 M3 may be the last BMW that's some what track worthy with minimal modifications. Even that car has issues with stock brakes getting too hot in just a couple laps. Definitely a good sporty daily driver though. I am daily driving one while waiting for my GT4 to get here.

I think the M2 will be a very fun daily driver that can be a decent track contender with some work/mods... like the E46.

Funny the sa tried to get over msrp. I got my 1m under msrp, but I got my name and a price down way before the hype built up. I wish I was a little more ahead of the curve for the gt4.

IMO the interior of the GT4 flows much better. To much gadgetry in the M2 for my tastes. I am not a big fan of the E-brake but I am a big fan of the slender center consul with a slight rise.

To be honest I was looking forward to this car but after thinking about it, I would much rather have an M3. If the weight came in around 3200lbs that would be great but when the manual weighs 3540lbs I would rather gain an extra 60lbs and have 4 doors and a better motor.

Currently daily driver is my chipped M235 with some mods- around 400hp 450 torque with chip. It is such a great car for the money. The question is will the M2 be that much better and did they do a larger turbo which with a tune could go to 450hp or so. The inside is kinda plastic but for the money it kills everything in the same class.

me: so when will you be able to order and will it be at MSRP or below?
dealer: not sure yet but when they are available, it will be WAY over MSRP
me: that's funny, I have a GT4 incoming at MSRP and they're actually limited
production
dealer: well when they assign allocations, I can probably get you one at MSRP

Here's hoping it's a great car and they make lots of them.
Spoke to a friend who is a SA for BMW. They will build as many as they can sell. There will be no shortage of M2s.

/\ agree

makes no sense for BMW to go to trouble to develop an M(ish) car and then limit production .. wasn't done for M3, M4, M5 or M6 or any other M.
