Even though I didn't have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get an allocation, I still feel that I am really lucky to have one!!
I feel Lucky too. This is pretty much a dream car build for me: 911s engine in a smaller curvy Boxster body with aluminum panels. I love the top! When I had a 135 convert, I was on the bimmer blogs asking for a manual top- if I wanted an all mechanized sled I would go the MB or BMW route. Look at the new Targa - just ridiculous in my eyes, beautiful but the top is over-engineered IMO.
Probably due to the top. That is perfectly fine with me. Just makes the car more special in my eyes. I like the design of the top, and I plan on driving this car just as much as I would a GT4 or a GTS.

That is interesting... From a functional design perspective, the Spyder top seems more like the Targa top than the regular Boxster top to me ...

Do you mean style over functionality? Yes, that might be true, but on the other hand the Targa Top and the Boxter top are both fully automatic so an argument could be made putting them on the same side of the line dividing mechanized and manual. Had the Targa Top been a removal piece like the old Targa, then I wouldn't be getting a Spyder because I would have already had a Targa.
