Default Over rev report help please

Hi

I’m looking at purchasing a 981 gt4, 25k roughly

I know some people don’t like over revs, I plan to keep the car for a long time, and I’m sure not many around these days with none??

range 1, 6180 @ 447.62
range 2, 228 @ 447.24
range 3, 14 @ 446.86
range 4, 20 @ 446.86
range 5, 0
range 6, 0

Am I correct in saying 3 events happened within an hour? This was very recent. As still less than 450h on the car. There is not a huge selection of cars where I am based.

I am after some feedback on what I should be asking. I believe ranges 1 & 2 are ok, and there are only 34 in total above that… any feedback would be much appreciated.

thanks

The 981GT4 over rev ranges are the following:

1: 7800 - 8000
2: 8000 - 8200
3: 8200 - 8400
4: 8400 - 8600
5: 8600 - 8800
6: 8800 or more

The GT4's ECU doesn't add to the numbers when bouncing off the rev limiter, as in not shifting up soon enough, it only adds when an inappropriate downshift drags the revs up into the range. I'll let others chime in on their opinions, however, my guess is the over-revs all occurred during a track event that included a mis-shift.

The range 4 even though just a few, having justed happened within the last 4 operating hours are a little concerning IMO. It looks to me that this car has seen quite a bit of track time, if that you're intended use and the price right I might consider it. We ended up passing on some beautiful examples when we were looking to buy to to range 3 and 4 over revs. In the end we found a great car with a clean DME. For the cost of these cars I would suggest taking your time untit you find the right one for you. Good luck in your search.

I encourage you to visit or have a call with your local Porsche dealer to discuss. For example, if a 981 GT4 had a range 5 over-rev and it's been at least 280 since, they could still CPO the car if everything checks out OK. You will receive many opinions on this topic; thus, I again encourage you to contact the pros. Best of luck with your pursuit; these are amazing cars!

If buying from a Porsche dealer, get them to include a Porsche 2-year platinum warranty to cover a potential issue that may happen. If not buying from a Porsche dealer, I'd need a hell of a good deal so I'd have the 5k or whatever it cost to buy a good warranty.

It would be better if the overrevs had happened earlier in the car’s life, but it barely nicked into range 4. Personally, I doubt that the engine has been damaged in the least by overevs. Given that you plan to drive it for a good while, if the price is right or you can leverage the report to make it right-er, I’d say give it serious consideration. There may be others out there, but there’s no guarantee of finding one you like at a comparable price. IMO, all the handwringing over this is way out of proportion to the number of documented engine failures due to overevs.

Does this information hold true for the Spyder?

@Steph718 I wouldn't see why not. It's the same engine in the same platform.

I don’t get why people frequently have overrevs. Our 981 GT4 has no overrevs even though it was tracked frequently for the first two years. Our 991.2 GT3 has no overrevs, it’s driven “appropriately” for what it is (haha) on the street. Ditto with our 981 Spyder.

I guess some people don’t downshift well?

it could yes be a bad driver that does it multiple times and catches it, or it could be someone actually fully engaged the gear, spazzed and didnt clutch back in once they realized what they did
