Default Pinion Gear Failure

Hi all. I was having my LSD inspected with a view to overhaul it if required and my guys found the pinion gear is useless after multiple teeth are pitted. Has anyone else heard of this? The car has 25,000 kms on it. I am asking my local Porsche dealer if they can help out.

That’s a pain…. Any symptoms that made you want to check in the first place?

Nothing on the gearbox but the LSD appeared to be deficient in locking and testing with wheels up showed that it had worn.

Following.

My trans is making a noise that is indicative of a wearing final drive; gonna get it into DeMan soon to have it looked at. From what I understand, Porsche doesn't sell ring & pinions separately—only complete gearboxes—so I've been keeping an eye on all the various auction sites to see if there are any low mileage G81.20 boxes up for sale (my car's at 67500 mi / 108630 km, for reference)

My techs have researed the failure and it is called "spalling". It results from a problem with the heat treatment/case hardening during manufacture. It usuall effects only pinion gears and not ring gears (my ring gear is in perfect condition). I have asked my Porsche dealer to help out as it is a failure that should not happen.
And yes it's true that Porsche will not sell the RPG set only complete boxes. But will they will sell reconditioned boxes; at about 2/3 the price of a new box. I guess they have a lot of recond boxes after the 3rd gear recall campaign.

That sux Warwick. Coincidentally just this week my gearbox started making a horrible rattling sound at low rpm and in any gear. My porsche guy had a stethoscope on the box and its definitely inside the box however no metal filings in the gear box oil. Porsche wont warrant it or offer spares

I may have to look at some GTgears stuff

You are 100% correct here. The way you see it coming apart is not due to wear. Its coming apart all chunky. If it was a wear issue, it would be just worn down and both sides would be just as damaged. This is a failure of the part due to the mfg process.

Curious to know what diff oil you're using... I had huge issues with redline shockproof in the race car burning disks.

That spalling doesn't look pretty - it looks worse than Warwick's pinion gear teeth. And you say you didn't find any metal filings in the oil. If you didn't, I'll bet that the case hardening has been ground up to dust and distributed through the whole transmission & bearings ....
How many km on the gearbox and what lubricant have you been using?

How much does increased power and torque have associated with this?
