am I too tall for 911?
I am thinking of buying a '80-'83 911SC and was wondering if there are any taller drivers out there and to get opinions on whether I am too tall for this car. I am 6'4". Volvo makes the most accomodating cars for taller people except for maybe BMW 7-series. Any thoughts or comments or "success stories" by other tall Porsche drivers? Thank you!

Andy,
I am 6'5" and fit, just about, in my 911 (964). A few reccommendations on what you can do to increase headroom are:
- look for a car without a sunroof (they're useless anyways)
- fit Recaro hardback shell seats and set them low (bit pricey at about $2k though)
I can drive mine ok, though when going over bumpy roads I do hit my head on the roof. I also cannot really do track days as I don't fit in with a helmet.
Good luck!

Andy......
I'm 6-4 and 210lbs and I fit fine in a 911. I'm on my third one in 36 years of owning several Porsches! I sold my Boxster for my 993 because I was very uncomfortable after a couple of hours driving the 986.
My driving position is pretty much 'straight arm, straight leg' and the seats in a 911 recline and go back quite a way to accomplish this. I can drive ALL day in total comfort.
Best thing for you to do is sit in one, drive it for as long as the owner will let you and see how it feels to you. Three or four people, all 6-4 or 5 can have different opinions because one might have longer legs and another will have a longer torso and will fit in the same car differently.
Good Luck!

Not sure about the 911, but the 944 has plenty of leg room.
My fiance is 6' 3" and loves to drive my 944 because it is so much more comfortable for him than our other cars. At 5' 4" I have a little trouble getting close enough to the peddles.

I'm 6' 4" and have an aluminum seat in it full time that I bolted in place further back than factory.
Also, I installed a small Momo steering wheel, something like 12 1/2". Gives more leg room for me.
YMMV

Along with different seats and no sunroof, you might consider a Targa. A targa will yield a little more headroom because the roofline is a little different. The taller driver slides the seat back, but the coupe roofline also starts to descend toward the rear. In contrast, targa stays flat to the bar and this gives a little extra headroom at the rear seat positions.
I'm 6'6" and I just barely fit in a '90 C2 Targa.
Incidentally the 911 cars I've tried have had consistently more headroom than the 944, 928 cars I've sat in.
You might also check the seat rails and see if there are additional holes for setting the seat base back a little further (this was the case on my car).
Good luck!

Just so you know, I have nothing at all bad to say about you. Ever
Headroom - with the roof off, I have plenty. Even rockitman would fit in mine!

It's great that at least one high perfomance car manufacturer does not disciminate against tall people!!!! I agree, it must be a German thing...BMW and Mercedes also provide pretty good headroom...
