Piece of CRAP!
Two months ago I bought a 94' C2 Coupe (beautiful condition) what a piece of CRAP! Drives like my 71' VW BUG! (has better brakes though). Interior is absolute CRAP! Waste of time, money etc. etc. etc. (but I love PORSCHE) so I bought a 2001 996 Coupe (only had 3200 miles on it) what a piece of CRAP! I just don't understand what the addiction is? These cars are still built with 70's technology. Absolute CRAP! Interior is better, but every other aspect of the car is CRAP! (good brakes though) - I sold the second piece of CRAP! and bought a 2002 BMW M3 - WOW, WOW, WOW! Stange that this Germany company can get it so right! Especially at about 20K less! (Brakes are not as good though.) Gee, I don't have to pay for any service for 3 years. Wow, three years of not paying for oil changes, general service, etc. - How nice. Enjoy your "toys" - I will be driving with a very knowing smug look as I pass just about everything (except for those damn TURBOS!)
Appreciate all the help that I have received during the past few months. This is a great board and a wonderful group of people! I wonder what BMW people are like? Probably dicks like me!

Dear Pono,
I am sure we have all felt the same way as you have one time or another about any auto we have ever owned. However all I need is a rainy or snowy bad hair day to make me happy to have my C4. Anyway I love the minimal interior. I know that the BMW guys are all great enthusiasts like most Porsche people. I doubt that you will get the same service as you got here though. Good friendly rivalry of course. Good luck with your M3. I have quite a few colleagues with M3s and they are very good cars. Too many doors for me,
Ciao,
Adrian

So, Pono
Lets get it out in the open then ... You dont like Porsche ??
Is it because of the Pinstripe? Purple Interior? ..... And, Is it just me or do you have a fixation about braking?
What Bl**dy sense of humour? <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I had some time today so I read posts from other lists. A couple of my friends had BMW's and while they weren't as vocal as you, they were disappointed in their vehicles...so I guess all this is a relative measure. Personally, I owned only 2 964's; a white 90C2 Cab/Tip that my wife drove and I had a PS 94 Speedster. We can honestly say that we had more fun in those cars than we've had since then. We now own an 02 C4 Cab/TipS (so both can drive), but the 964's were fun. Yes, they leaked oil a bit, and yes they needed the distributor vent kits, etc.etc. but that all comes with the territory.
Really hope you enjoy your M3 and the BMW folks. We'll miss you!

Hey Pono,
Why don't you search the Web for keywords "E46 M3 Blown engines"....better still go here! Then you will realise how GOOD BMWs are!

Hi Pono,
Just 2 quick points:
1. BM's all look the same...Boring! a M3 looks like a 316i with a "Tupperware Kit" attached.
2. Secondly I bet the resale value/depreciation of a BM will be much worse than any Porsche.
Anyway, have fun with the new car, hope to see you back.
Cheers

M3's are very nice family cars. Hopefully Pokey (or whatever his name is) will be very happy. That is if he is for real.
However given the young Pokester doesn't value intangibles; design; build quality or rarity (let alone performance)maybe he should look to a hot Nissan or Honda.
Based on my in depth research (I've watched the "Fast & the Furious" a couple of times) I think that is more what he is after.... oapbox: <img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" /> <img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" /> <img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" />

................but more seriously Pono, I'm an ex-BMW owner and I have to say that, while a good dynamic car - and, yes, the brakes were pretty good too, the build quality was not there - nice on the surface but cheaper than expected underneath and I had a lot of trips to the BMW shop.
So good luck and I wish you well.

I gotta go with Pono on this one. If I have $50k to spend on a car, The new M3 wins hands down. It is just a better car than the 996 in every way. To all you "ex" BMW owners, I'd be willing to bet that you owned something before the NEW M3. I had a '97 M3 and I would have traded it for a 964 any day of the week, but the NEW M3 is a different animal.
But, Pono, Just so you know, I have a friend who has a 1996 993 Coupe with 15k miles and the BMW store in Houston just offered to trade him straight across for their 2001 M3 with 3600 miles so which one will hold it's value better? That's an almost 9 year old car for a practically new one. So just to do you a favor, I'll give you both my Porsches for your M3. You'll thank me someday!

No question about it, Porsches hold their value extremely well. I sold my 94' C2 Coupe with 55,000 miles on it for $34,000. Granted, the car was $68K new, but that was almost 10 years ago! I paid 31,100 for the car and made a little, so yes, I agree, the value holds quite well.

Cant believe anyone would call a 964 crap. Owning a 92 America Roadster and absolutely loving it! Perhaps Pono is confused - I think he is talking about an M5 not an M3. I could live with an M5 for a family car.
