Anir moves in for the K.O.!

The M3 is just another hot-souped-up version of a workaday range of saloons.
The 911 is, well, a 911, and like nothing else..
Its all down to 'je ne sais quoi'...build quality and 0-60 (or maybe more likely 30-50) are nice, but in the end it all boils down to that
feeling.

I have a feeling that Pono is another wannabe kid that dreams of Porsches and BMW's reading comparos from magazines and quoting prices from them ie:

[quote] Point #1 0-60 in 4.8 Seconds
Point #2 333hp
Point #3 $45K
Point #4 3 year service costs $0

He talks about the brakes! LOL!!!
Where is the raw feeling you get from the 911? where is the precise and fast turn in? where is the "i'm one with the chassis" feeling you get driving a 911? Where is the song from the flat 6 that tells you loud and clear every day that there is no other car on the planet than this?

Anir as usual hit the nail right on the head describing the differences of the M3 VS 993.
Myself as an owner of an E36 M3 and the fact that a good friend of mine owns the E46 M3 and have driven it quite a few times, I conquer fully with Anir's observations.

By the way the M3 is my wife's car too!

Thumbs up

Three series BMW owners in the 80s always said their cars were better than Porsches. Nothing has changed, including the arrogance of the "new" three series owner.

Both the Porsche and the BMW are very well made vehicles, but in no way is the Porsche "crap" by comparison.

Personally, I think the streets are way overcrowded with BMWs these days. They are as common as VW Jettas, which are just as good as a base 3 series car for a whole lot less cash. I find most Porsche drivers down to earth people (I said most). I find most (most, but not all) BMW people just want be seen in a BMW.

I was a mechanic and worked on both, 3 series, 5 series, 7 series, 944, 928, 911, also Audis, VWs Volvos, Saabs, etc. I find nothing about a BMW any better than a Porsche, Audi or newer VW. Oh, but it does still have the image going for it.

If I was going to drop $45,000 on a car....I'd get another Audi S car, upgrade the car a little and put a plate on it that said M3-ETR!

PS....Have you ever seen a 928 blow by a new M3?

Sure, Steve. If you skip the options, I believe you can get one for about $46K. We paid $55K (MSRP) for our fully-loaded (i.e. pig heavy) example. There is no way that anyone has to pay over MSRP for these cars.

It's interesting to witness the general differences in personalities between the Porsche and M3 boards. The Roadfly board is a disaster - very little useful info, with lots of chest pounding and insults. In fact, I try to avoid Roadfly because it makes me embarassed to own an M3.

Pono, where are you? Junior high school's out for the summer, so surely you aren't too busy to answer FF's challenge to a bit of gentlemanly competition. Study hard and get your driver's license so you can join us at the track.

.........I've just run a roll of film - including a bunch of pictures of my AWD C4 with its "70's technology" - through my '50's Leica 35mm camera which uses god-know-how-old technology...........guess Jane Austin was right "one half of the world will never understand the pleasures of the other"

I wonder if ol" Jane would have taken FF up on his challenge?

I just read a few days ago that BMW produces 100,000 3-series cars a year . I knew they were commonplace, I just didn't know they were that commonplace.

That said ... while I've never owned one, they seem like good cars. If I could only own one car, and it had to have a real backseat, I think a 3-series (in particular, an M3) would be a great choice.

Pono .... I suspect he may not be legitimate, which makes FF's challenge even more compelling. However, unlike the typical phony that's a freshly registered Rennlister, Pono actually has a history of legitimate-appearing posts on the 964 board. For example ... where do I get a trunk liner, my horn and one headlight quit working, my 1994 C2 is for sale.

Well, perhaps Pono will show up at Moroso in his new M3, carrying pictures of himself in his old 964 & 996? Should I hold my breath?

A week after he listed his car for sale he claimed to have sold it for $34K. I can't believe that you could move a 60K mile '94 964 for $34K in a week, especially in Florida.

Just a punk trying to stir ****.

My sentiments exactly, and I'm guessing Pono's pedestrian posts were cunning/subtle attempts to make himself appear credible. Besides, who turns over a (relatively rare) '94 C2, an '01 996 & purchases a new M3 all in a two month period (5/13/--7/11/02)?

Heheheh, he's gone, guys. Like a hoax exposed, there's nothing but thin air.

Just in case he's lurking around, here's my M3 story.

My business partner is a BMW man. He has a Z3 and the 750i, and used to have a 540i. He traded in the 540 for an M3, silver. He parked it right beside my AS C4S, then had me come out to look at it. Nice rims, I said. He opened the door, sat in and was showing me the paddles, etc. I wasn't really paying attention, I was looking at the tires and rims. Then he said, listen to this. He turned the ignition key, and "click, whirrrrr, click". Nothing else happens. "Nice sound", I said, "click, whirrrrr, click" . Back in the office, he calls service, and they flat bed it out within the hour. Great service, I said.

Saturday comes by, and he picks me up at home. What happened, I ask. Oh, nothing. They adjusted the goberwoggle and replaced the doohickey. He takes me to the 2.5 mile stretch of isolated straight highway where I've taken my C4S to 170+ mph. He does the reconnaisance run, turns around and floors it. "Vroooo - cough, cough - BLAMMM!! - sputter, sputter", coast to the side. Smoking car. He uses the hands-free phone since his knuckles were so white gripping the wheel. I didn't dare say "Nice sound. Vrooo- ", you know the rest. I said "Nice phone".

Anyway, that's my M3 story. Nice rims.

Exclamation

This is the FINANCIAL section:

$34K for a '94 C2 ?? You've been very lucky. Here in Italy 25K Euros (which is almost the same as 25K$) is the top price for a 964. We're talking about a very low mileage car with immaculate history and one careful owner. So Italy is a really nice place to live, not only for food and women...

This is the TECHNICAL section:

M3 engine is the example of how engines should be built. 333HP out of a small block engine without turbocharging means very good design. However the Porsche flat six is the only sportscar engine with mercedes-like reliability. You've been on 964 forum and surely you noticed mileages on memebers' cars. Let me quote from a 1998 Car and Driver issue about '84-'89 Carreras : "...at 450000 kms you put new valve guides in and you're ready to go". It was a Porsche expert who wrote, not an enthusiast

and finally the DONUTS section:

Easter 2000, Autobahn to Munich. My '90 C4 vs M3

Translated from the original slang of La Spezia - Italy

1. Who the h%%% is approaching?
2. Get that lights down, you're making me blind!
3. OK, so you wanna play? That don't impress me much (It's NOT Shania Twain)

964 ownshift to 4th, then up to 205 km/h, then 5th and pedal to the metal

M3 edal to the metal as well, then speed limiter in action....

Result: 262km/h (trip computer) vs. 250 km/h (DME computer)
