Bruce - no, actually I am talking about the M3 not the M5. I would imagine that the M5 would make a nice "family car", unfortunately, the M5 is well over $45K - the stats above are for a 2002 M3. Still sticking to my guns about 964's and 996's being pieces of CRAP! (Damn good brakes though!)

This thread is still going on??????
OK, the story so far. Our friend Pono
- used to own the 71 bug from heaven (it drove just like his 94C2!) was it Herbie?
- bought, judged as being crap, and then sold 2 911s in the last 2 months - at least 1 at a profit ($34k - looks like we should all respect Pono's sales talent)
- doesn't understand Porsche addiction
- likes brakes
- recites stats as if they translate into real life performance
- overuses the crap word (well, it got our attention).
- doesn't like paying maintenance charges
Now I'm not clear whether Pono has actually gotten his M3 yet but whatever he is clearly infatuated with it so I say GOOD LUCK and GOODBYE.
I'm actually going to post another thread later on about what levels of performance we actually do use on the street - Pono raises an interesting point about passing everything on the street and I gotta say that most hot mustangs and vettes can live with my P-car (and Pono's new M3) until speeds that I'd be uncomfortable with on most US roads. This is why I'm still mulling over playing with my gear ratios.....

Ruairidh - nice summary. The 71' Bug was from heaven. It was a great car during college (I wish I had it today - I hear that they go for quite a bit!) Yes, I bought (2) 911's sold one for a profit and about broke even on the other. The purpose of the word CRAP was as an attention getter, as per your response, it did its job. I thought I would "fall in love" with Porsche (wanted one all my life) 964 didn't work, so I figured "just throw more money into a 996, that should work!" Stats do not translate into real world performance. (But 4.8 in 0-60 is still impressive, even if I could never get that time). I LOVE GOOD BRAKES! I have several Ducati bikes (2001 996S & 1973 Monza 160) Nothing like feeling what really good brakes can do (and the Porsche was the first car I have ever owned, that I could actually feel the brakes performance). Mustangs & Vettes are for cretins (not dicks like me!) I just picked up the M3 a few days ago. I hate paying for continual service charges. You guys are fun.

Pono - I'm sorry your P-car experience didn't work out for you. I am glad you got out pretty even as far as money went (I'm not so sure I would if I were to sell my 911 but as that ain't gonna happen I'm OK with that).
Do me a favor - drop us a line in a couple of months as to whether the M3 works for you. I hope it does, but would be interested to hear.
I also like great brakes mind you that is because I get myself into some pretty dump scrapes with my driving <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

Do not understand the thread initiator "I love Porsche" and then dislikes the 964 and the 996. What does "I love Porsche" mean? Why do you "love Porsche"???? Question of taste, of course, some people prefer BMW's. OK. But, why the "I love Porsche" bit???

Pono,
I see you're from Miramar.
PCA has DE at Moroso on Aug. 17, let's meet there and see who is fastest.
I have -95 993 (stock, except the exhaust) with really really worn out tyres.
Do we have a deal?

This was a fun read. An M3 lover who got lost in the Porsche board. Hey, Sally, or is it Pono? Enjoy your car. It won't run for long!!

Pono,
Since we've got both a 993TT and E46 M3 SMG-II in the garage, I think I'm qualified to address your comments. The M3 is a nice, all-around car - especially for the price. For the real world, it's hard to beat if you've got to lug kids and groceries around and just don't want to live the minivan life. I'll even grant you that the M3 has much newer technology at its core, especially with the SMG.
However, the 993TT simply outclasses the M3 in terms of dynamic abilities, braking, and build quality. The M3 is a heavy pig with numb steering and a very soft suspension out-of-the-box. On the track, the inferior durability of the brakes and, in many cases, overall build quality has made itself known.
Since you relied almost solely on the word "Crap" to "articulate" your feelings, I'm not sure why you prefer the M3 over Porsches. If it's the interior, I can promise you that the admittedly expensive full leather / carbon fiber interior of my 993TT is much nicer than the decent soft plastic in the M3.
Again, for the money and as a single, jack-of-all-trades car, the E46 M3 is fine. However, as a true sports car, it's overrated compared to a Porsche. If you disagree, you might consider FF's offer to meet you at the track.
BTW, the M3 is my wife's car, so you may indeed be a "Sally".
