Mr. 951,

I flash my lights at all Porsches (if I see them in time), I just don't understand your post above in relation to my post about my Vauxhall Nova. Have you read the whole thread? Somehow I doubt it. Let me help you out:

Earlier in this thread, an MB owner basically highlighted the fact that his particular model was part-developed by Porsche. Of course I gave him a little light ribbing about it - i.e. my post above about my Vauxhall Nova using Porsche morrors. I hope that clears things up.

I am not a model-**** - just saying that it is not feasible for me to remember to flash my lights at a particular model of Benz.

It has a Porsche badge.

I think that is the only sensible way of looking at it.

I realize that some portions of my post may have come off a bit harsh and some of the humor was lost...(snip)...I just want to clarify that I dont wish to offend anyone and the "negative" comments dont apply to most on these boards.

Stuttgart, absolutely no offense taken, and the humor came through loud and clear. Re my comment: "...you need to get yourself to a few drivers ed events. Nobody cares what you drive, how much you make, or where you work." You sound as though you're the type of person that would really enjoy these events, and you'll find many like-minded people there. I agree that it's a small population of Porsche owners who feel this way, but it's a blast when you have a bunch of 'em all in one place. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

BTW, did you ever make it to Pocono?

silverbullet,

Actually ed newman was kind of downplaying what really happens here in Metro/NY. Instead of killing the offender, he/she gets sued, which is clearly a fate worse than death!

So, to quote E. Fudd: "be wery, wery careful".

I've been following this topic with interest. I'm not a Porsche guy yet, still looking to give a good home to a 914 or an older 911, but I've been a Corvette guy since '91. (I hope that won't get me kicked out of here! ) Anyway, a similar discussion to this pops up at least once a month on my favorite Corvette board (about waving at oterh Corvette drivers), and the gist of the gripes always seem to boil down to:

1. Pre-'84 Vette drivers wave at everybody. They generally do a lot of their own wrenching (as the owner of a '77 I can attest to that) and they own their cars because they really love those old machines.

2. Current generation Vette drivers wave at nobody because they bought the car as a status symbol and they haven't got a clue that there is an entire car culture thing going on.

3. '84-'96 folks sometimes wave and sometimes don't.

Personally, I wave at every Vette I see when I'm driving mine, and I wave at Porsches when my friend with the 914 takes me for a ride. (Hey, I can't reach the light switch from the passenger seat!)

No I didnt get to Pocono last weekend.

I checkout out the events schedule and it appear that the surrounding regions do quite a bit of DEs there. Id like to plan on going to the next one (last weekend in September I think).

Im also thinking of signing up for the Zone 2 "Performance Driving Clinic" at Summit Point (Last weekend in October) as a prelude to beginning Driver Ed. Consists of classroom stuff, skidpad, and track time - sounds like it would be worth it to attend.

Just look for the black '51 with Cups.

Great topic! Having owned an Alfa prior to P-car times, I thought everyone acknowledged fellow marque drivers. P-car folks here in the great Northwest are not about to wave or flash the lights at a fellow Porsche driver. There is also a class thing going on regarding 914 vs 911 vs water cooled, ad infinitum. Soon after purchasing my SC ten years ago, had a fuel pump failure on a busy freeway, and watched a three car 911 caravan roll right on by without any pretense of aid. Finally got help from a BMW guy who actually stayed till the tow truck showed! I estimate about one in 15 to 20 will wave or even smile !!!

recieved 3 replies - intrested if any are on the this site

- 996 c4s with marsielles plates in the south of france who was cruising at 200km+
- red 944 in cornwall near padstow
- black 911 turbo conv - near chelmsford essex

i am quite distinctive (in europe) as have silly monaco plates which have only 4 digits in light blue. otherwise am 996 blue conv

That was me! I got my first p-car when I was in college and it was a rusty, ragged old '73 914 (that unfortunately didn't live very long). Shortly after buying it, I passed an older 911 who waved and I did almost jump out of the car! I thought that was the coolest thing.

Ten years later, I got my SC and I have to say I still think it's so damn cool that Porsche drivers acknowledge each other. It doesn't bother me if a driver doesn't respond, but it's still really cool when they do.

Man... I am trying to do my part. But so far nothing... I'll probably be the one jumping out of my seat if anyone here in So. Cal. can suppress their imageitis long enough to wave/flash back.

I feel better though. Today on the way home I saw a one 996 (I think) Cab and a 911 but something like 5 Z3's. Maybe Z3's will take over as the predominant sports car and make seeing a Porsche special again.

It doesn't bother me if others don't wave or blink back. There are about a zillion P-cars on Long Island. I've found that, other than the type of car we drive, I have little in common with many of their owners. (I also ride a motorcycle and the same goes there).

I'd guess most of the people on this list would appreciate a wave, because the list is primarily made up of enthusiasts. It's even more magnified at a PCA event such as DE, Treks, concourse or whatever. Those are normally the people who wave, and that's fine with me.

I've gotten as many waves or thumbs up from Z06's, and even rice rockets than I have from Porsches. We have a terrific cruise night on Long Island on Tuesdays; mostly US muscle, hot rods, and rice rockets....hundreds of cars. The two times I've gone, I was the only Porsche there. Guess what? Everyone was terrific. Many loved my car, would ask tons of questions about upgrades and tracking the car, etc.

It's great to be around people who LOVE their cars. If it's a Porsche, even better, but just because someone drives a Porsche, doesn't mean they get it.

So, next time if you don't get a wave back, too bad for the other person.

Very true, on my bike we always waved to any bike - reguardless of make or model, Even the hardcore panheads waved to the tiny cafe bike.

I ALWAYS wave, tip the hat(when wearing one) beep, flash the lights, whatever. Most drivers of Porsches return the greeting, although alot of them dont. The ones that dont are oblivious, rude or just plain stupidin my opinion.
