LOL!

I forgot in my earlier post that whether or not I wave/flash, it really doesn't matter around here. Believe it or not in the last year in San Antionio Texas I've seen like 2 P-cars, 1 Boxster and 1 993.

Saw 4 Boxsters today. One of them dead ahead, facing each other at a red light, both of us in the front row. Flashed, no flash back from any of them.

Most of the return flashes I've been getting have been from 993's, 944's, 928s, even a red 356(?) who flashed, smiled and waved in the brief instant we passed each other on a city street. I haven't seen any other 996 so far. I think I will give up flashing Boxsters, for 2 reasons:

1. Too many of them
2. NONE have replied in the 4 months I've had my C4S.

Nothing against Boxster owners, particularly in this forum. But, I've decided to wait for the Boxster to initiate, and I WILL reply.

On a different note, if you saw a Cayenne, will you flash? If you flash, would you be surprised if they didn't flash back?

Thumbs down

i have given up. think its down to numbers on the road as there are large number locally and the general attitude of the majority of people here means that that u never get a reply - they are all too busy trying to maintain their air of 'coolness' to acknowledge a fellow driver - think as has been said in this thread before - the p cars are with some people just part of the
lifestyle accessories. just another status symbol
and dont appreciate the car at all but just what it says to the outside world abt their success/image.

I'm in London, always flash, get a response around 50% of the time. Puts a big smile on my face.

Way too many Porsche down here to flash or wave at them all. Eg, on the way home from work I'll see 3-4 Boxsters and maybe a Carrera...and that's only one way. Occasionally I'll see an older car and I will flash that one: I saw a 914 and swooned.

Maybe it's the old gearhead in me but I always wave when I see a nice enthusiats car. I don't bother to wave much at the newer Porsches though since I rarely get a wave back, but I did have a guy in a 993 turbo speed up to get a closer look at my car, could've been the historical license plates I suppose but he smiled and waved as he drove by. As far as Boxsters, I don't think the average Boxster owner even knows what it's all about. (no offense to my fellow rennlisters) What gets me is the number of idiots in Audi's and BMWs who think they're gonna outdrive me, maybe the figure I'm afraid to hammer on my old car.

I know this thread is a little old, but I'm trying to catch up...

First of all I was unaware of the flash/wave idea until a rennlister told me about it. Maybe it should be part of the familiarization the salesmen do as part of taking delivery of the car??? When I had my bike I didn't know I was supposed to wave until someone told me about it. They also made sure I knew that because I was on a rice-burner I could not, nay, should not wave at a Harley. These are the unwritten rules of ediquette. You can't really get annoyed with people for not knowing about the flash/wave. Well, I guess you can, but it's a little unfair.

Besides, I know in most places if you get a flash from an oncoming driver it means there's a cop somewhere up ahead. So if you flashed me I might have just thought you being courteous, which is rare in Cali, but not unheard of.

OK, I'm done defending people who may, or may not deserve it. Now I have a protocol question. Since being made aware of the flash/wave I have been conscious to (try) and flash/wave. Today I found myself behind an older 911 C2 (can't recognize the model just yet, but give me a little while), both of us got caught behind a lamo Volvo, which made a usually fun drive quite boring. Anyway, I wasn't sure what the protocol would be. I could wave and/or flash (I think I waved). But my question is, if the roles were reversed, how would I greet/acknowledge another p-car that is behind me?

BTW, just in case you are keeping track. Today I ran accross 6 p-cars (one Boxster, one 944, the rest 911's). And none of them responded. Actually, to be fair I was a little late on the 944. He looked at me and by the time I woke up and got my hand up he had turned his head away to make his turn (probably a good decision).

Anyway, just so you all know. Not all waterboys are into the status of the Porsche and a trophy wife. Some of us do actually care about have fun performance automobile. Although the trophy wife idea sounds pretty good, if you know any send 'em my way .

This is why people dont wave. Two reasons - they are either stuck up on themselves and take pride in the fact that they know "How their engine is cooled" (Its all oil in the end folks) or the people on the other side of the fence are sick of dealing with the above mentioned individuals.

I bought my P-car four years ago when I was in college. I must say that although my enthusiasm for the car has grown, my enthusiasm for fellow owners has not.

My fathers Vette's NEVER failed to recieve a wave from a fellow driver... heres how I gather the "Porsche Driver's Class List" breaks down...

1. 356 and all is variants. No contest. They always wave and are happy to chat with you. They appreciate the taste of the driver, not the "class" of the car.

2. Pre-964 911's. 90% of the owners know exactly what they have and will usually acknowledge fellow P-car's regardless of engine location. Those that avoid the wave and stare at you are really actually pissed off that they bought an old POS and it has cost them thousands of dollars to maintain.

3. 914's. These drivers always wave - if you wave first, they almost jump out of the car, headlights flashing the whole time! (j/k)

4. 924/944/968. Most drivers will wave at fellow waterpumpers, but will not wave to the "***-engined lot" assuming the motion will be in vain. Alot of these owners start out as "I've always wanted a 930, couldnt afford it, started here..." and end up after 6 months of ownership as "911's are crap and the owners think they have something special. Ill NEVER have one of those in my garage!"

5. 928's. Surprisingly enough, these drivers are damaged goods. They dont fit in with the flat sixes, they dont fit in with the 4 bangers, and most others have the "What is that...?" reaction upon visual. These are the outcasts of the P-car world - they notice your car when you wave... oh yes they do... careful they dont follow you home late at night and exact revenge for high maintenance costs and lack of acceptence.

6. 964/993/996. Hmm... quality of the owner starts to fade here. Not very socialble. Many seem to be making a financial statement rather than an emotional purchase with these cars. It says "Porsche" on the back, so they've got to be rich, right? Some of these chaps are honestly surprised when they pop the "hood" too.

7. Boxster. Pretty much the bottom of the barrel. Even the diehard Boxster owners on this forums will attest to the fact that 95% of these drivers have no idea whats going on. Forget the wave here, these guys have their car for 36 months and dont know what other P-cars look like.

Enjoy, <img src="graemlins/icon107.gif" border="0" alt="[icon107]" />

Funny I used to have a Westfalia and we had the same discussion at a meet many years ago. There was the same classification between the old Westy, the middle guy and the water pumpers. The conclusion was that more money doesn't automatiquely mean more fun.

I always do a light blink. And if I'm behind them, I'll zig zag a little to let them know I'll play. Most of the 911 guys love trying to blow my doors off, and many succeed - but it's fun to get the adrenaline going.

Stuttgart, you need to get yourself to a few drivers ed events. Nobody cares what you drive, how much you make, or where you work. If you love cars and driving them well, especially Porsches, you'll be a very welcome part of a great bunch of people.

Met a nice black 993 at a 4-way stop in the middle of town last week... I waved the guy through the intersection first with a slight smile... didn't think he would do a thing as I was in my "bastard child" '83. The guy got this huge smile on his face and gave me a giant wave! I, of course returned it - kind of nice

I think we should give people a bit more credit sometimes... they may not always be paying attention. I'm sure I've missed other drivers before, and I ALWAYS wave when I see one. Really though, I think the guys (and gals) who go nuts waving either want the P-car you're driving - or own(ed) the P-car you're driving

You, sir, are part of the minority and I salute you. I honestly wish there were more owners that thought like this.

I realize that some portions of my post may have come off a bit harsh and some of the humor was lost - (just read an article in AutoWeek about how the 924/944/968's are "crap.") I just want to clarify that I dont wish to offend anyone and the "negative" comments dont apply to most on these boards, but rather to the average, everyday P-car driver that cant change his own oil.
