Question in two parts:
1. Can you mix different viscosity multigrade oil of the same manufacturer to get a different viscosity oil. I continue to stock up on 15W50 Mobil One for the 911, but can't find the recommended oil for the Boxster. Apparently, HBL, the original dealer could not find the right oil when they changed the oil in the Boxster and used 15W50 Mobil One.
2. If you can mix viscosities, what happens to the viscosity when you do. Say mixing mixing equal parts of 15W50 and 5W30, what do you get? Would you get 10W40 or something else?

Alan,
Viscosity blending is how it's done "at the refinery" (actually at the packaging point).
I don't know if a handy chart exists on viscosity blends, though - I'll have to see if I can dig one up somewhere.

Yes. Check this FAQ on the Mobil 1 web site: <a href="http://www.mobil1.com/why/faq.jsp#faq6" target="_blank">http://www.mobil1.com/why/faq.jsp#faq6</a>
Another good resource is this site: <a href="http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php" target="_blank">http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php</a>

And this one: <a href="http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=001605" target="_blank">http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=001605</a>
The weighted average of the two oils is close enough.
The Mobil 1 FAQ says you can mix Mobile 1 with anything, but I’d stick with the same brand. I recently mixed 3 quarts of 0W-40 with 9 quarts of 15W-50 in my 993, which gives a viscosity of about 12W-47.
