Post Gotthard Pass

A great drive is over the old Gotthard pass in Switzerland. Just did it Monday. It is pretty steep and curvy. The road is nice and wide. Very easy to overtake. Going uphill is lots of fun, most other cars seem as if they were parked on the road. This is where the Porsche's acceleration and power is most impressive.

Indeed I think most of the Swiss passes are great gounds for driving Porsches. I am even considering doing a trip from London down to Switz. just to see what they are really like.

I remember when I was 19 driving my 1.1 Fiat Punto from the Uk to Italy. It was a 2 day trip with overnight stop in France which gave me loads of time on the 2nd day, so I would drive through the Sustenpass (near to Interlaken). Going up was quite painful but coming back down was great and I'd often overtake much quicker cars. Probably something to do with me being a tad reckless, the car being very light and leaving braking till the last second. I can immagine that in the Porsche the uphill bit is the fun part though!

Great link Phil !!!

I've done a lot of the Swiss and Italian passes on a bike, and loved them.
Last year I met a 996 coming towards me as I was heading up the oberall pass, and neither of us were going slow !

The most well known among the biking world is the grosse-glockner (sp?).

Riccardo, we did the Sisten too. We were planning to do anotherpas, near the Jungfrau, but it had snow on it - in July !!
Snow chains don't work very well on bikes

Cheers,
John.

I did a few of those passes as a passenger in my Dad's 1978 Opel Record.

Aahh,

Last summer I drove via the alps to Venice and back in 4 days.

The driving and the views were spectacular.
Best four days of last Summer, probably of last year.

Oh well.

Back to the grind - PhD thesis to write etc.
Tito.

I did it a couple of times. Thanks Phil for the link.
The last time i had to go to Lugano (Swiss Italian side..for those who don't know)..so i went trhu the Furka pass.. it was in may02 over the night. It where a great light moon over the snow mountains, every thing was from lighter to darker blue. so a space landscape!.

Talking

This is the trip I made 10 days ago:

day 1: Lausanne (check at my Porsche dealer), Sion, Brig, Nufenen, Gotthard (old route, not normal pass), Oberalp, Laax.

day 2: Laax, Chur, Lenzerheide, Albula, St-Moritz, Silvaplana, Julier, San Bernardino, Lukmanier, Oberalp, Andermatt.

day 3: Andermatt, Susten, Grimsel, Ovronnaz (thermal baths), Villars, Col de la Croix, Pillon, Gstaad.

That's 12 great passes in 3 days, a lot of twisties, and very little traffic (weekdays)... Just plain fun!...

Greetings,
--Pierre
