Default A rose by any other name would smell as sweet?

I'm always somewhat surprised by how people refer to/pronounce the model numbers of their cars, and the inconsistencies in how it's all done:

356 (usually pronounced three-fifty-six, not three-five-six)
550 (usually pronounced five-fifty, not five-five-oh)
911 (usually pronounced nine-eleven, not nine-one-one)
912 (usually pronounced nine-twelve, not nine-one-two)
924 (usually pronounced nine-twenty-four, not nine-two-four)
944 (usually pronounced nine-forty-four, not nine-four-four)
928 (usually pronounced nine-twenty-eight, not nine-two-eight)
968 (usually pronounced nine-sixty-eight, not nine-six-eight)
917 (usually pronounced nine-seventeen, not nine-one-seven)
959 (usually pronounced nine-fifty-nine, not nine-five-nine)

Get the picture?

So.......if that's the history of reference/pronunciation, why do some people say:

964 (I pronounce it nine-sixty-four, but frequently hear nine-six-four)
993 (I pronounce it nine-ninety-three, but frequently hear nine-nine-three)
996 (I pronounce it nine-ninety-six, but frequently hear nine-nine-six)
997 (I pronounce it nine-ninety-seven, but frequently hear nine-nine-seven)

What's going on? Are new generation owners unfamiliar with the traditional pronunciations? Any ideas?

"I don't care how you pronounce my family name as long as you buy my cars"

Based on that, it doesn't matter.....
