I began my career as a junior draftsman for Bell Labs and went to school nights, finally graduated with a masters in Physics. Multiple promotions got me to the level of a Technical Manager responsible for underwater acoustic systems and submarine quieting technology. Retired at the age of 62 to enjoy my hobbies which include sailing/boating and cars. Along the way I have owned, 1955 MG TF1500, MGA 1600, Alfa Romeo 1600 Guilia Sprint Veloce coupe, 1750 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce, BMW 635M, 84 944 ,88 911 Targa, 90 911 Cab, 97 993C2S and my current set of wheels, a Panamera 4S. Oh, and I still own the 1750 Alfa along with a BMW 330Ci and Volkswagen Touareg. The salary was good, the retirement pay was sufficient to own a waterfront home in New Jersey and a 4 car garage ranch house in upstate New Jersey.

My advice to you youngsters is to work hard, have fun and enjoy the ride.......you get only one trip around.

my first Porsche was a 1980 931 bought in 1981 when I got out
my first real job was in 1981, engineer, in AK, ~40k/year, very good for the early 80's
the last 5 years I made (top 2 percentile) as an engineer working a job I like, lots of free time
I own my home, live in a very low CoL area, home prices never dropped, just sort of flatlined...
I'm 'making hay' now, as they say, and hope to cash my shares in, in 2-3 years...
I'll still work, because I love what I do, but in a flexible consulting capacity....

I'm glad I never cared about $$$, I just rambled (stumbled?) thru life trying leave a minimal wake...I'm also glad I like (and according to some) and am good at what I do....and lucky I stumbled into a sweet situation...I'm proof you can make some $$$ without making it your raison d'être

but most of all I am blessed by the company of those around me (who put up with me lol)
my wife has earned her 'angel wings', in other words, she's earned her place in heaven 'cause she's done her time in he!!

I'm 20 and have worked at a Valentino's restaurant for the past 6 years on minimum wage. Time to start looking for a new job, though. Pay raise isn't going to happen at this place.

I currently drive a 1979 924 NA, and a 1982 928S.
Selling the 928S soon for a more upgraded 928S or possibly S4.

I don't really fit since I don't own a Porsche yet, however, I think it's helpful to see how others balance their income/expenses so I'll contribute.

I'm a single 28yr old pilot, make ~85k (anticipating closer to 100k next year), one rental house, no debt, and am heavily debating whether I can *really* afford a ~2006 C2S within the next year.. The little voice of reason in my head says to buy an older porsche, but nothing has made me grin like the 997's I've test driven..

23yr old Semi retired / part time student. I am going to eventually get a degree but am using university more for girls and partying now. I have no salary but the rental properties I purchased and the equity I gained on some favorable stock purchases plus dividends keeps me more than satisfied at the moment.

52 yrs old, just retired so salary kinda' sucks. Whatever I decide to pay myself.

Started in the oil industry as a roughneck during university, then double majored in Engineering and Economics. 30+ years around the world drilling exploration wells, then desiging, building and maintaining the rigs. Oh yeah, married for 23 years too.

Motorcycle and ski racer from early teens through college, then focused on work 'cause I didn't have the talent or dedication necessary to be a really good racer. Learned to put my head down and "just do it" when it came to work though.

Now there are 2 997's and 2 Rovers in the garages, a boat or 2, a couple of houses and my health intact. I think the real fun's just beginning.

50 years old. 84' 928. Laid off early in 09' after 15 years with the company. Was working for one of the major Cable TV operators as a senior draftsman/designer. Reluctantly went back to work for the same company a few months later working in their dispatch center. It totally sucks and the pay is embarrasing so I wont go there. Took a 27% cut in pay. Waiting for things to pick up and hopefully get back to my former position.
