Default 5 Star Registration in Montana to beat sales tax.....

Has anyone here used 5 Star Registration in Montana to get around paying state sales tax? I see a lot of Montana plates in Naples, usually on Ferraris, Porsche, Lamborghini, etc....

My Florida sales tax on my incoming 911 would be about $8500, 5 Star Registration would charge about $1050 to do the LLC and send me a tag .....almost sounds to good to be true. My other question is insurance? If my 911 is registered and tagged in Montana but driven in Florida and North Carolina, where is it technically insured?

Thanks

This sort of thing is just asking for trouble, IMHO.

It’s too obvious, too visible, and too easy for lawmakers to single out a group of people.

Just wait for the inevitable legislation changes and clawback. I’d set aside the $9k if I were you.

I mean, it's blatant tax evasion.

Can you get away with it? Probably...

Is it still tax evasion? Yes of course.

IMHO, it's pretty cheeky for 'guys like us' driving $150k discretionary luxury cars to be contemplating tax evasion to save $6k. Pay up and sleep better at night.

On a 911 I don’t really see the need. If you had a 7 or 8 figure car collection then maybe. Or if you flip cars every 6 months.

Make sure the dealer is ok with you doing so. Some dealers do not want to title a car to Montana because then the car is effectively "punched" out of market, which in turn could affect future allocations.

wow all the hate
it can be done if you chose to
need to make sure that your insurance company does that. Not all of them approve registration in one state and garaging in another
make sure they disclose to you the annual fees to keep LLC open and Montana annual car registration fee as apparently it has been increased recently above a certain value
then make a decision
but you already see , you are going to get a lot of hate from some people

It’s not hate, it’s pragmatic advice.

The tax code exists for a reason, you can work within it but outright evading it is likely to end poorly for you.

There’s a reason why some crime bosses finally fell due to tax evasion charges… Al Capone etc.

How is it evasion if legally we are allowed to register a car in any state we choose to? It just so happens Montana has no sales tax on cars. Creating a legal LLC and registering a vehicle there seems to me like an option we have available to us if we choose.

We live in NC and Florida and have for 30 years. We register our cars in Florida….is that considered evasion of property taxes on our cars to the state of NC? No, it’s not.
