Default driving gloves - wtf

seriously and im sorry if this was you or you fall into this grouping. but WTF. i rolled past a 997 on my way to work today and the driver was wearing leather driving gloves. gorgeous day outside, 68-70, nice crisp march evening around 7pm ( yes i work nights ) in the dc area. not speeding too badly, when i see this very clean black 997 in the middle lane of the belt way. he must have been going like 55-60ish as much of the other traffic was passing him on both sides with ease. as i slowed down from my normal cruising speed and got ready to wave hey to a fellow enthusiast ( had a PCA sticker in the window ), i was immediately horrified by what i saw. a younger guy in his 30's, wearing a polo shirt and leather driving gloves. i couldnt, i just couldnt bring my self to thumbs up or wave to this clown. my first though was he must have forgotten he wasnt driving a BMW, but you cant really confuse the lesser of the german cars with a porsche that easily. maybe he had some bizarre medical condition and his hands were cold, but with the windows down and a short sleeve polo that couldnt be it. maybe he getting ready for some spirited driving, nah that car was way way to clean looking to think it gets driven to the limits.

as i passed, there is no way he wouldnt have seen a gt4 down shifting and passing by him with his windows down, he didnt even flinch to move a muscle to say hey....that stuck up persona, i just dont get it and gives the rest of us a bad wrap

I wore gloves when driving my 991 GTS, I found that it prevented the Alcantara steering wheel from getting messed up with time, to each their own.

My wife uses gloves when driving to shield her hands from UV damage, it’s kinda sexy!

it was a regular 997 wheel, not driving aggressively at all, and wives get a pass for almost all things imo - happy wife = happy life

No Glove, No Love…. This is why he didn’t give you props, as he was playing it “safe” while enjoying his experience, NOT YOURS!

Honestly I thought driving gloves were a little suspect at first, then I got a pair when I took delivery of my GT4. I thought the feel would take away from the rawness of the drive, like wearing a condom. I got them to protect the alcantara, and now my hands feel naked when I dont put them on, and they enhanced the grip I have on the wheel.

They help prevent hand sweat from soaking the leather of your steering wheel, improve grip and feel better.

I understand OP as I'm not that type of person either. I get second hand embarrassment looking through the offerings in the Porsche Design catalog, but somebody must be buying that stuff.

Guess everything has this type of thing. I'm into canoeing as well. Every once in a while you'll see that person down at the canoe launch pulling a paddle out of a personalized fleece lined paddle sock. Bet they even bought their underwear from LL Bean.

Whatever, to each his own.

Are custom made canoe paddles a real thing? I can see it, sorta. Custom sized, hand made bike frames used to be a thing, so why not paddles.

Oh yeah. Solid piece of cherry or inlaid woods forming intricate patterns. Get your name or logo in them...can even get a custom canoe. You don't know whether to use them or hang in an art gallery.

Etsy sellers have them. Get the Peccary (wild pig) from the Romanian seller.

It’s a great way to avoid wearing out alcantara. 🤷‍♂️

I see drivers at club socials wearing $300 driving shoes, are they also to be shunned?
