Question Reducing Size of Photo?

I want to send a photo of my car by email. It's 2700x1800 and 13.9MB

Problem is neither of my email accounts will let me do it because the photo is to big or something.

Can I reduce it to send it but still have the person on the other end be able to return it to the original size and resolution? If so what program or whatever it's call should I use.

You can reduce it, but I'm not sure if you can enlarge it with the same resolution after receiving it. Any kind of photo editor works. Do you have "Paint" or anything?

If it's that large, I bet it's a bitmap.

Like A930R says, you can reduce it with all sorts of imaging software but, if you have Windows, you almost certainly have MSPaint, which will do the job, but it can take quite some processing time depending on your PC. When you get the image size reduced, you can also save it as a JPEG instead of a bitmap, which will slash the memory size.

Ah, I just noticed you want the recipient to be able to re-enlarge it.

I think your best bet in that case is simply to open it with Paint, save it as a JPEG and leave the physical size alone. That will significantly reduce the memory (file) size, but (for almost all purposes) there won't be any reduction in quality.

I think.

The best package for all your photo needs is Photoshop. If you don't have that, you can probably download a free utility from www.download.com

It's a while since I fiddled with MSPaint, but I think you can just select file/save as... and change the 'save as type' box option to JPEG.

Yep, BMP is a bitmap - very heavy on memory usage.

Microsoft has an image "resizer" as a free download. Do a search on "power toys"

Crap. Sent the email before reading about the resize on the other end.

Simple solutions:

1. Use an FTP
2. Use photoshop and compress in JPEG and consider lessining quality
3. Use a different ISP for outgoing email. If there is no "relay" blocking the ISP, you can use another ISP for sending.
4. Pay the extra $20 per year to Yahoo for a bigger mailbox (not sure if this affects sending, but does increase your mailbox)

http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/

Gives you 10 Meg file size per email. Cost is $30/year for 25 Meg inbox.

This is what I use.

Yes, Paintshop has an "optimizer" function that makes a photo perportionally small and email friendly. The reciepiant must have a graphics program to enlarge upon receipt. Make sure you check dialog box to maintain aspect ratio before enlarging or making smaller.
