Discovered the following when taking pictures through the vent tubes above the timing belt for an interested buyer. It looks like the timing belt is not centered on one of the gears (passenger side).

Where the gear shows is the driver's side (top 3 pictures), where the gear does not show is the passenger side (bottom 3). I bumped the motor several times and it was always the same scenario.

Tells me the timing belt change is needed sooner rather than later for this car. I have never worried about the timing belt on this car, and have had it changed religiously. Timing belt light has not come on.

Thanks! Tempting, but I already have another fun car. Tempting though, because the 944/951 was the first Porsche I fell in love with. I still clearly remember seeing a 944 for the first time in 1982: it was butterscotch gold, parked outside the Omni Hotel & Convention Center in downtown Atlanta. I had never seen one before, and asked out loud, "What is that?!".

Too bad. I've been craving a 928 for some reason. It's one of the few pcars I have not owned. No way I could swing it with out unloading the 951 though. Plus I love white!

Bump - still available! Priced as is because I know it needs a Timing Belt service, sooner rather than later. This is a great project for someone wanting to get into an 86.5 5-Speed. It has been very reliable as my daily driver.

Bump. Car is still available.

Most recent use: step-daughter and prom date had choice between my white 928 and a fully loaded 2011 Nissan Maxima for Prom (last night). They chose the 928! (and returned it unharmed).

For a data point, about a year or so ago I sold a 1980 928 with a perfect engine but with a mildly modified body (updated to GT) for $6500. Silver over dark blue leather interior.

It's a shame to see such fine cars sell for so little, but that's is the market!

Replied to PM.

Dan, I agree it is a shame how the market treats these cars. I am probably not helping with this Rennlist ad, because Excellence says 10-13K for my car, but I know it should get a timing belt job, and I would also do a "top end refresh" (take off Organ Pipe intake, check all vacuum & fuel lines, and wiring), which I was about to do before I bought my silver car. As it is, I plan on putting an ad in Autotrader, and will price it at or closer to market in that ad.
