WTB: AMD athlon XP processor cheap
#3
It was an 3000+, on a nvidia nforce 2 chipset. It was actually a friends computer. It was set to the wrong speed in the bios. Thinking it was the 200mhz model, i set the frequency to 200mhz when infact it should have been set to 166mhz. Now I have to replace his processor due to it frying. So, If anyone has any AMD athlon xp processor there looking to get rid of, let me know before I order a new one.

I don't have anything that fast left over but I will tell you that the 3000 proc runs at 200mhz+ bus speeds not 166. As long as it was not turned on while the heatsync was off there is no way that it fried. Can you access the bios? If you run the bus speed to high the system will not even boot. Something else fried the chip

I cannot get to the bios, and I cannot clear the bios. I swapped motherboards, didnt work. It was probably due to the fact that I tried starting the computer so many times at the 200mhz clock not realizing that it was too high, and that I should clear the bios. So, now im out 100 bucks beacuse I have to buy the kid a new processor. It was a stupid mistake on my part, and now im paying for it. Most motherboards reset to a safe clock when they realize that the clock is to high for the processor, I guess this one was in a bad mood.

Its an MSI K7N2 deluxe 2 platinum... and it doesnt beep when I start it up. I have to agree, I dont really see how the processor could have fried (Its not like I messed with the voltages or anything). Its almost as if the cmos would just clear so I could get into the bios and make the changes, all would be fine.. but the cmos either wont clear or something major has gone wrong. Ive tried using the clear cmos jumper, and taking the battery out. No go... Any help is appreciated.

Well in your case maybe you did fry the proc but a heads up. Clearing the cmos is more involved on most of the MSI boards. There are 2 jumpers you have to use. I found this out the same way. If you need the instructions let me know.

Thanks for the help/tips guys. Helstrm, the manual only showed one jumper on the board for clearing the cmos, but please let me know some instructions for the future if I do end up running across any of those boards. I ended up ordering a sempron 3000+ off ebay for 100 dollars shipped. I guess thats not too bad. We all learn from our mistakes right? Thanks again guys.
