So John, I created an album, put some pictures there, and then uploaded the same picture to this thread directly from my computer. Should I have linked the picture to my album, or does it not matter?
Francois, I believe that it's okay.
The exact same picture in your album contains the exif data , proving that it was taken within the contest period.
Here is my contest photo. The orignal photo is in my album. I am building this 951 to race in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Some Fikse wheels and stickers will look good going up the mountain. I also entered the first Fikse wheel contest.

The comment refers to the EXIF data which a digital camera adds to th picture file. EXIF includes the date and time, exposure information etc. This allows the judges to establish that the photo was taken during the contest period. You don't have to do anything special, simply upload the photo to your album.
