The recorded view is a little distorted looking (and cropped funny) - it's however iRacing generates the mirrored window. It looks even better (and not at all distorted) when you're IN the Rift.

IMO the Rift *completely* changes the game. For simracing in general, not just iRacing.

One silly little thing that I find SO cool (stupid... silly... but COOL!) is how iRacing set up rocks and pebbles.... car goes off track, kicks some dirt/rocks up on the course and then as the car ahead of you drives through, little rocks get kicked up.

Well some of those suckers are pretty big, and they truly do get rendered in 3D. In VR they come FLYING AT YOU. More than one occasion I've involuntarily cringed LOL. Good thing they haven't modeled "broken windshields" into the sim because I'm sure I'd have gone through a bunch of them otherwise.

What would the ballpark price on a rift + a rig that can run it (excluding wheels and pedals) be?

I would agree the Rift is awesome, example when coming out of the pits I can just look over my shoulder for on coming cars.
The first time I used it was in the MX5 Global car and I tried to reach up for the cage when I wanted to get up :-)

Rift is $600 (+ shipping, etc.)

You do need a hefty PC to run it. You can "get by" with a lower end PC if you turn a lot of the graphics candy off, but you still run a risk of occasionally running into framerate dips. Random framerate drops are a quick way to induce motion sickness.

I'd look at recent gaming PC's that have an nVidia GTX-1070 graphics card at a minimum. Most places will sell something this spec for about ~$2k. Dell, Main Performance PC, etc.

If you go to Oculus's web site they have links to Rift ready PCs, that would probably be the easiest.

Or build your own, I only spent about 5 minutes picking these parts but overall it would do the job well.

$1350, i5/GTX1070/16gb DDR4/SSD - You can spend more but this would handle iracing no problems.

Definitely true for a good starting point but make sure it's at least a GTX1070. I think that'd be a good benchmark.

I have one friend who bought an "Oculus Ready PC" via a link from the Rift page and it works fine for the Rift demos and stuff but it still really struggles with iRacing unless he turns a lot of the eye candy down.

Rift + iRacing = hefty PC.

If you find a PC you're considering, post it up here and I'm happy to give my thoughts on whether or not it should run well enough.

That's a cool video Jim! I find it really interesting you tilt your head to compensate for the non-existent G forces.

A driving coach told me that it's a leftover habit from my motorcycle days. Says every guy he's coached who came up from 2-wheelers does it. *shrug*

Not sure if we are doing a race tomorrow night, but I'm not going to make it, will be on my way to Iowa for Thanksgiving.

Yeah was just thinking about this. I may not make it either. Meeting up with some friends late afternoon for drinks, wife coming down.... chances of getting home in time to make the race are pretty low.

I won't make it either. Heading to the lake in the afternoon. I'm looking forward to next week though, I just installed a perfect pedal on my g27 and it seems like it's going to be much better. I just have to get used to only having an inch or so of travel.

Ok, I'll cancel the session instead of driving around by myself.

Jim downloading Dirt right now (on sale today) what do you use for a handbrake? Assume you want one for this game. Thinking my sequential might work pretty good.
