I really liked this configuration! If Phil and I had not jumped the start it would have been a really tight race !

Totally agree, once we came back on track after the black flag the intervals were pretty much fixed. Every time I went into the laces I seen Justin and Tony coming up out of the boot on the other side.
I'm so so on the configuration, but agree if we do Watkins Glen twice in a season we should both configurations.

Ok, getting close to my own man cave here. Since I have the playseat, and don't really want to spend a bunch of money buying something else, what does the brain trust say I should do to get three screens rolling? It can look horrendous, if needed. I will have the entire mostly finished basement to myself which is about 400 sq. ft. or so.

Seems like we are DEEP into the summer slowdown.

Do you have the 3 screens already? I would seriously consider the oculus rift if you haven't purchased screens yet. I love my tripples, but it's a lot less money for a rift. Maybe Jim can chime in as he actually has raced with one. I think the new rift runs at 75hz and needs less processing power than rendering 3 screens.

If you have the three screens, just make sure they are level and then fiddle with the alignment until you feel they accurately represent what reality would look like out of 3 windows. A bunch of pages ago I posted pictures of my setup and what the display image looks like.

I know you don't want to spend on a new rig but an Obutto Revolution with the triple screen mount is a great value and a solid rig.

I would just build a table around the playseat. I built mine with the wheel lower than the sceens. so the rim of the wheel matches what is on screen. I do agree with Justin though. if you dont have screens the rift might be the way to go.

Don't have the monitors yet because I was using our TV as the monitor. Might just continue that for the time being by putting that TV down into the basement and getting a new TV for the big room upstairs.

My issue with the rift is that the newest DK2 isn't supported, right? Also, the reports from Jim had some negative issues with the rift. Maybe I just reuse the TV for now, and later get a rift when the new one is supported?

Now, to shop for a new TV.....

For iracing, I would strongly discourage a TV. A lot of TVs have processing that goes on when they receive the signal to clean/sharpen/smooth the image. Because that processing takes time it introduces lag into what you see. The physics could be a few milliseconds ahead of the display which can really screw up your driving. If you are going for 3 screens, I'd say go straight to 3 120hz screens.

These are the ones I have:

TV's aren't that bad from my experience. I have a central TV and two side monitors and can't see a difference but I'm not running very high resolution. At higher resolution it slows down but might be due mostly to my low end video cards.

But yes, monitors are better but when on a budget TV's will do.

We now know Justin's secret

TV's are a bad idea specifically for the issue Justin referenced. They often suffer from "input lag" which is the processing time the TV requires to render the image. Translated: what you see on the screen is dated and may have happened up to 100ms ago (that's a tenth of a second...) That means all your inputs and controls will be late. If you have the choice, stay away from using a TV.

The only negatives to the *current* Rift (DK1, not DK2) are 1) screen resolution and 2) no translational movement. I got over #1, it doesn't bother me anymore, I've raced with it exclusively since I received it (which was most of the last 2 seasons). #2 isn't really an issue for racing games, generally your head stays in the same spot. (In other words, you can *tilt* and *turn* your head... you just can't *move* your head. It won't pick up moving forward or sideways like when you try to lean forward to look behind the steering wheel, etc.)

Really the Rift is the way of the future. If you can handle waiting a few weeks - put an order in for the next gen Rift, the "Dev Kit 2" (aka DK2). Much improved resolution plus it will pick up translational movement.

Since we've kinda hit the "summer slowdown" (LOL) and I have a DK2 on order, I'm tempted to toss my DK1 on eBay while prices are high and just leave my rig sit idle until my DK2 shows up in August. I took down my triple monitors not long after I started using the Rift. Current estimates now are that the consumer version (aka CV1) won't actually ship until deep into 2015... so I'd recommend getting on the list for a DK2.
