So, my HD on my PCM 3.1 was overheating causing my PCM to cycle on and off. I am working on cloning it and converting it to SDD, but can't get the original to show up on my PC, so I think it's toast. I brought it to my local computer shop to see what they can do for data recovery/cloning. In the meantime, my HD is obviously out of my PCM. I am surprised that everything is working perfectly on the PCM, minus the NAV, but I don't use that anyways (I installed the ISUDAR Carplay module).

So, my question: What am I missing not having the HD installed in the PCM, minus NAV maps and personal song storage??

Default SSD Replacement

Hello All,

Curious if someone could point me to where I can find a replacement SSD for my 2014 Cayenne.

Regards, John

Thanks to Doug, I upgraded the PCM hard drive on my 2013 GTS.
The HDD interface was IDE and my car's manufacturing date is Nov. 2012, and PCM was made in Oct. 2012.
The only concern I have is operation at below freezing temperatures. In the spec sheet of the Transcend SSD, operating temperature range is 32-158 F. So, I guess we'll see.

Thumbs up

Many thanks to twodollardoug for the detailed post. I replaced the hard drive in my 2014 without incident.

The only minor change/improvement I would suggest is to skip the step of disconnecting the ribbon cable.

With the 2 screws removed and the hard drive tilted up, you can simply remove the green adapter from the disk. Hold the edges of the board and gently pull it straight off. With 2014 (and later) using sata drives, it is easy to remove and later reattach the board to the disk. Much easier (for me) than fiddling with the ribbon connector--especially while balancing the PCM unit on the edge of the dash.

I'd do the same if I had an IDE drive as well.

Super helpful thread. +1 to leaving the ribbon attached to the circuit board on the sata equipped cars.

Minor note, the drive bolts are torx 8 which is annoyingly small.

Thank you to everyone who has provided input to this thread, I have replaced my HDD with a SSD and have copied another SSD just for the sake of peace of mind! HDD was not faulty but just a case of future proofing. It may be a placebo effect but my Mr 12V seems quicker. For information I used this to clone the drive :- Wavlink USB 3.0 Dual Bay SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station, really easy to use and just let it do it!

Very many thanks to all who contributed to this thread. I changed to HDD in my PCM for a SSD without any issue and in fact made a second SSD just as a spare. Guarantees that the one fitted will never fail!
I used the WAVLINK USB 3.0 Dual Bay SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station from Amazon. Cost about £30, excellent and really easy to use. Just plug the drives in press the button and wait. Simple as that!
Anyway, all is fine now and "future proofed"

First of all many thanks this thread it saved me 4k.

Will add my two cents if it helps anyone:
1/no need to disconnect PCM, just unplug hard drive carefully
2/The SSD I bought is Samsung 870 EVO 250GB SATA 2.5"(6.3cm) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (MZ-77E250)
3/My first attempt to clone my HDD to SSD was using the dd command line utility in Linux. That somehow failed. I tried again using FoxClone and it worked.
4/The hard drive didn't get recognised initially (no maps) even though the reboot issue was solved. I had to upgrade the PCM after writing this ISO to a DVD: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sV6...BXCngUn8p/view. The upgrade process ejected the DVD midway, I had to re-insert it. My guess is during the upgrade the PCM does something to the hard drive to recognize it.
5/as an aside don't try all of this on a Mac it's a world of pain, an old windows/linux machine will work much better. And do not boot your PC with the failed Porsche Toshiba drive plugged in, it may play with the boot loader.
