The rebuild begins ...

Looking at the pic of your motor I see that you have a straight pipe where I have an intermediate muffler.
Is this what they call a bypass pipe?
Did you do this or was it there when you bought the car?

That is what is referred to as a cup pipe. It was installed when I had the engine rebuilt. There are many threads discussing this, but I love the extra engine sound, and the massive horsepower increase . Mine has the Catalytic convertor, going into the cup pipe, then into the "rear muffler" as defined in PET.

Sundog,
How goes the rebuild? Making any progress?
I just got my engine stand mount from Pelican and I'm going to get the engine mounted on it tomorrow.
Did you manage to get all four of your engine stand brackets onto that 'C' mount?
I can't see any way to make that happen. The best I can do is three.
Can you post a close-up pic of how you mounted your engine to the stand? It might save me some fighting!
thanx

I'm going to start the tear down this weekend. Too many other things in life to dedicate the right amount of time to the project this month.
It was fairly easy to get the arms mounted to the C-mount. I've got lots of travel on the arms on my engine stand.
Check out the picture for reference.

Dumb question, please... How do you lift the engine to insert the yoke into the stand? I've never rebuilt a 911 engine, but my wife has (participated in several rebuilds with her dad). She's not home to ask...
Thanks in advance.
Have fun with your projects.

I jacked the engine up as high as possible on the floor jack, started the yolk into the stand, and then my daughter and I lifted it up and pushed it all the way into the stand. You must be very careful if you use this approach, as it is possible to drop the engine if the stand moves. Next time, I'll get 3 buddies, but I was out of beer.

I lifted the engine with a chain fall hanging from the rafters in the ceiling, inserted the engine/yoke on the stand and then lowered it. Took less than five minutes for that part of it.
I bolted chain between the rear engine lifting eye and the two holes in the front engine mount bracket.
I guess I should have take a pic of it but I didnt think anyone would be interested.

Catching up to sundog
I got an entire day to move forward with my engine dissassembly today, so I think I managed to catch upt to sundog...
Here is my engine on the stand with one fuel rail removed.
And upside down to remove the exhaust. This is a nasty job because porsche left you with very few choices to reach the exhaust stud nuts. I have no Idea why after 30 years of developing this exhaust they couldnt have made it possible to reach the nuts!!

Here is a picture of the engine rotated with the bottom up and the exhaust removed. As with the other pics you can see how leaking oil has covered everything with a thick sludge. Yum.

Here is the engine with the top shroud, cooling fan, power steering removed.
You can see where oil was leaking at the top of the cylinders as well.
Apparently everything leaked on my motor!!

Ok, Finally got some time this weekend and stripped it down to where the rubber hits the road. A lot of the engine tin is very corroded. There were a number of missing, and incorrect size bolts holding it together. I am very unimpressed with the previous rebuild, as it seems like oil is leaking from everywhere after only 40K miles. Maybe some more time over Thanksgiving. And then off to the engine rebuild class with Bruce Anderson, and Jerry Woods.

Sundog,
Looks great so far!
I managed to get to the point where I was ready to remove the cam gears, but I haven't had a chance to do anything since then. (Got side tracked insulating the garage for winter)
Keep posting all the details, as I hope to make use of your experiences! (Did I hear you mention you were taking a class?)
My engine tin was also heavily corroded. However after checking out the prices on a couple of the pieces it is evident to me that its not going to get changed! (I think it was about $450 each for the two back pieces alone)
Who do you think you will order the rebuild kit from?
