Question Original Smartycam and MXL2?

In light of PCA's recent recommendations for installing a rearward-acing camera, in addition to requiring one facing forward, I will likely try to revive my old SmartyCam and see if I can use it for a rearward-facing camera. I am curious if I can plug my original SmartyCam into my MXL2-based system that ALSO includes a SmartyCam GP HD.

Has anyone done this as yet? And if so, do you have specific tips or recommendations for configuration? Is the GPS signal "broadcast" across the CAN bus for any device to consume?

Just downloaded the last versions of FirmUp and SmartyManager for my SmartyCam.

Thanks to any who care to offer suggestions or recommendations.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Toby,

That should work fine using a data hub, I'd run it with no data (who needs that on a rearward facing camera) on the old camera. If you have a regular data hub, I think I'd swap to a hub with external power. The GP likes that better anyhow.

Thanks Jerry. I'll give it a whirl.

Like Jerry says, works fine.

Agree if it is two GP's that supplementary power is good, mandatory if you run two HD GP versions (battery capacity way less). I have two dozen of this setup out there. There's a diode equipped five-pin male to unterminated that will power the Hub if you have an open port.

For forensics, I put date and time, speed, throttle and brake.

Happy Thanksgiving to all and may you never need that video for anything but entertainment!

Perused the AiM site, and could only find a 2-port powered CAN hub. Did I miss something? Since I will have two cameras, two LCU1's and the GPS05 all connected, this would indicate to me that I would need a 4-port CAN hub coming off the dash, a 4-port coming off one port of the 4-port (future expansion) and the powered 2-port hub for the cameras. Am I counting correctly?

Toby, I would not sweat this too much. Stick the second camera on the Data Hub and run it!

One thing I do on the SC HD GP's in particular (and cameras in general anyway) is to use the USB cable and a charger to fully charge the cameras if it's been a few months before the first event. People don't often have the key on before using these for too short to get the batteries above a critical point.

Peter, I have an older SmartyCam (thee big original one) and a SmartyCam GP HD. Being the **** person I am, I am trying to figure out what I need before I start putting things back in the car.

I second your suggestion about charging with the USB cable beforehand. That is part of my pre-race weekend.

I appreciate all the advice and assistance from you, Jerry and Matt!
