It's basically what you're building, already built :-)
True... But mine cost less than $2.00. And without the capacitor/breadboard, literally only costs pennies for a single 330 ohm resistor. Can't beat that.

This post was very helpful in my latest project to add fuel level to the MXG1.2 in my Spec Boxster. Thank you. I used an 1800 ohm pull up resistor. Data below.

If the sender wires are going directly to the cluster, is something converting that signal to a CanBus message for the DME to receive?
