Default AIM Smartycam Ver 2.1 and GPS09 module…how do I connect

Hello,
I have an AIM Smartycam 2.1 and a AIM GPS09 antenna. The Smartycam is a 4 pin female connection and the antenna is 5 pin. Does anyone know what is needed to connect the two in a 2009 997 CUP, the spare CAN plug coming out of the ECU is connected to the Racelogic, so I may need a splitter or bridge in order to get ECU info…PLEASE HELP!!

@fallenangel96734 Ok. The camera will need a four-pin GPS-09B antenna and cannot use the five-pin antenna. Good news is that it's half the price of the five-pin antenna.

You will also need an ECU Bridge to supply power and limited car information to the SmartyCam 2.1. You can get one from anyone of a number of places, Ray Phillips at Precision Driving Analytics or on the West Coast, Wine Country may be able to help. Get the one specifically for the 996/997 GT3 Cup cars.

The nice thing is that the 996/997 GT3 Cup ECU Bridge kit has a "through-pass" connection, a way to connect to the pigtail CAN coming off the ECU harness and have the Racelogic plug into it. So no splitter needed other than the Bridge.

Why do you need a SmartyCam if you have a Racelogic?

Hey thanks for all of the information…finding a GPS-09B is going to be a challenge. I will refrain from hooking it into the ECU (I have a KMP paddle shift system that is going to need a splitter of some sort to hook into the ECU and still have the Racelogic hooked up…I think). I have the Smartycam so I might as well use it to make some videos and such. Just getting that and the Racelogic and paddle shift system to talk to the ECU is my main goal…any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

You would need a GPS08B to go to the camera. You would also need the an ECU Bridge. I would split the CAN signal the Racelogic is connected to. If you don't really care about the overlay, sell the SCHD, get a SC3 Sport, correct data hub, and GPS09. If you have time, sell the SCHD and wait for the SC3 Corsa with built in ECU Bridge.

If you want this setup, you have to find a GPS08B somewhere. I have new one and you can probably find a used one somewhere. The GPS09 will not work for you.

The GPS09B is a 5 pin unit and a hardware change of the GPS09. The SmartyCam version you are thinking of was only really carried by me and was replaced for all but a few customers with GPS08B. There are no SmartyCam GPS09 new and probably won't ever be as the SC3 uses the standard GPS09. Also, the ECU Bridge is not compatible with the GPS09. I had that problem way back.

This is the issue with AiM. I forgot that the new antennas (GPS-09) are not compatible with Race Studio 2 configured hardware, specifically the 996/997 GT3 Cup Bridge. Went through this with Dave F’s 997 Cup, Sheesh.

So, go ahead and buy Matt’s GPS-08B (4-pin) antenna. If you trade, get some money back, as the four-pin was half the five-pin price. Buy a 996/997 GT3 Cup ECU Bridge.

Is your KMP shifter connected to the car now? If so, is the Racelogic connected to the car now?

The 996/997 GT3 Cup can be connected between either the shifter or the Racelogic. You will need a splitter, I get them from mil-spec wiring in Mooresville NC. PM me and I can send the job number for when I had them made before.

Still don’t understand why you would want to add the SmartyCam and required accessories if you have the two camera Racelogic.

Of the SmartCam 3’s, only the $900 Sport is available right now, the Corsa and GP coming but quite a bit more. But you can use your antenna!

IMHO, the ECU Bridge and GPS isn't the way to normally go. I'd use a S2DL with the camera. Current tech and more capability. But, the best plan is to wait for the Corsa or even get a SCHD GP 2.2. The 2.2 will work with the GPS09 and not need anything else.

Not really an AiM only issue. Time marches on and not all new items are compatible with old stuff. The ECU Bridge isn't considered current production anymore, so no surprise it's not supported with the latest devices.

The 996/997 GT3 Cup Bridge is still a catalog item, IIRC, and the only plug and play solution besides Racelogic.

IMO, I don’t recommend adding a SnartyCam to a car equipped with a Racelogic HD2.
