Aim MXL basic question data sessions

Aim MXL basic question data sessions
I am new to my Aim dash. I have the Aim MXL Pista, GPS 08, and a SmartyCam. I understand I can download data from the track sessions.
When/how does the Aim record/ identify if my car is running for example if I drive 5 minutes in my neighborhood or do a 10 minute dyno run without any identified laps?
Does the Aim always record data only what triggers the sessions to be recorded that can be downloaded?

RPM is the reliable trigger. Automatic in that device.
