Default Ammo Gelee wheel protectant

I have been thinking about trying Ammo Gelee on my wheels for protection from brake dust on the Track. Has anyone used this on your wheels and what has been your experience with it? Thanks

Dr. Jim H... Do you know that Larry (owner of AMMO) was at the swap meet last year?

No, I did not recognize that he was there. I never get to do a lot of shopping, will look this year and talk to him. I am going to order some and try it. Will also check reg list to see if he is coming this year

I would recommend picking up some Optimum Gloss-Coat. It is a hybrid ceramic coating, similar to Opti-Coat, but designed to last up to 2 yrs vs. permanent. It has high chemical and temperature resistance so it works very well on wheels. You can get 10cc for about $60 which is enough for a set of wheels and the rest of your GT4.

Does Opticoat protect against small stone impact and also does it repel brake dust?

I should probably specify that Opti-Coat and Gloss-Coat are two different products.

Opti-Coat is a pure ceramic coating, Silicon Carbide (SiC).
Gloss-Coat is a hybrid coating Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Silicon Dioxide (Si02).

Main Differences
  • Opti-Coat is only available to Authorized Installers and comes with a warranty depending on how old the vehicle is
  • Opti-Coat is designed to be permanent, while Gloss-Coat lasts up to 2 years
  • Gloss-Coat can be purchased by anyone, but does not come with a warranty
  • Gloss-Coat has similar benefits as Opti-Coat although not as strong, good chemical resistance and high temperature resistance

I would not claim increased chip resistance as a benefit for any coating currently on the market. Paint protection film would be a much better choice for those looking to prevent rock chips. However, both Opti-Coat and Gloss-Coat will absolutely repel brake dust.

The reason I asked about the finish on the wheels is because both Opti-Coat and Gloss-Coat are designed to be applied on clear coated surfaces.

Thanks Dan. I may have to give it a shot if it repels dust. I'm tired of the huge amount of brake dust that collects on the wheels. I use armor all now but it's not permanent and needs to be reapplied regularly. It also leaves a temporary slightly dull finish which defeats the purpose of having clean wheels.

I have used the consumer version (Gloss Coat) on my GT4 wheels since new and it's an incredibly effective product when it comes to keeping brake dust from caking onto the wheels. You still need to wash the wheels, but typically a regular shampoo mix will do the job vs. having to pre-spray with Sonax or equivalent wheel cleaning products.

I have no experience with Ammo Gelee, however I am continually impressed with the products that Larry brings out.

Ammo **** is so effective I use it on our cream carpets at home when our son has a bloody nose.

Ammo Lather is significantly better than Lexol in both cleaning power and the ability to leave leather with a true OEM matt finish.

Now you're making me want to try Gelee... but the Gloss Coat is doing it's job so I'd probably be buying it just to test another product

I just got some Gelee and did my track wheels on Sunday. I will going to VIR in two weeks. I will report back then. May order some gloss coat for the gt4 stock wheel. The track wheels are OZ's

I've had gloss coat on my wheels for about a year and a half. Just reapplied last week. The coating does help with chips but does not prevent them. I have quite a few chips and only 8,000 mi. Between washings I detail with griot's spray on wax (got that one from a fellow RL'er) and it makes the coated surface much slicker and better than the gloss coat by itself. At washing, soap and water does handle the brake dust well.

I use Prima Wheel Armour on my GT4 wheels. Though I have extra Optimum Gloss Coat lying around, wanted to try the Prima product first.

It's easy to use and has mild chemical cleaners to help remove tar / black spots. It doesn't really repel brake dust, but makes it much easier to clean.
