A trick I learned from an old upholsterer is to use an ordinary cotton glove, with a latex one underneath if you like, and just massage whatever product you are using into the leather. You can be much more accurate with the placement of your product, avoiding buttons etc., and you can get a really good feel for how the surface is taking the product in. Works well for me.
