I've got a PC, a rotary (Metabo) and a Flex. If you rate polishing results on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being lowest, IMHO polishing by hand would be in the area of maybe 1.5 or 2, PC 3-3.5, Flex 4+ and rotary 5. The Flex is a very rugged and well made machine that does some serious correction. Though in my brief experience with it, it will generate some heat just as a rotary will.

With any of these machines, it's probably advisable to start out slowly, work one small area at a time and check your results often.

So, in direct response to your question, a Flex is probably a better choice than a rotary until you get some experience using a polishing machine.

Phil's a pro detailer who uses what he sells and won't give you bum advice just to make a sale

I think I'm ready to take a step up from my PC. Sounds like this is a good tool to give a try. does it do a good job of breaking down the Menzerna polishes?

Default Noob polisher questions

Looking for a polisher that I want to use for putting on a even coat of wax mostly. I'm concerned that polishing removes a bit of paint/clear coat every time. This in my mind is not good over the life of the car. We live in Florida and the sun is pretty heavy on us. Taking off the clear coat will lead to eventual paint damage, no?

So given the above, what polisher and other products would be right for me?

Thanks in advance,
Constantine

constantine,

the Porter Cable will be your best bet. Its pretty hard to take off clear with a PC.

I would use Menzerna SIP and 85rd for polish (depending on what you need for your car or cars)

Then finish with a nice sealant or wax. The PC will be enough to do what you need.

We are running a special right now on a PC kit:

I just used my Flex for the first time on the decklid of a Mercedes E320 cab I bought as a toy for the wife, I had to paint the trunk, bird crap was left on it by the previous owner, but I wetsanded it then used the Intensive Polish , then Micro , then wax.. Wow big difference from my Cyclo..
