Default Help with old, dull paint

I have browsed this section many times but still have a minimal idea of how to approach my paint. I have a gaurds red 1986 951 that has been garaged for most of its life but, the paint has become dull and lifeless. The roof and hood are the worst, I am assuming sun damage? It's almost looks like there is a fog on the paint.

I have tried many off the shelf 'carnuba' waxes, mothers clay bar with poor results.

I need your help on how to:
restore a glossy luster to the finish
remove swirl marks
maintain the finish
not make it worse

Some advice on products to use would be great.
I plan on picking up a cheap random orbit buffer to use. I know you all recommend the PC, what difference will it make in the hands of a novice?
Also some suggestions on pads would be great too.

I am sorry that this is a redundant topic that has probably been covered many times but I need to get a list of products to my wife for the X-mas list. I hope to bring the car out of storage in spring with renewed finish.

Thanks all!

For oxidized paint try the following;
•Wash the paint surface and dry thoroughly
•Clean the paint with chemical paint cleaner (Klasse All-In-One) using an orange foam pad at speed #4, this may take 2-3 applications
•Once the oxidation has been removed use a decontamination system (Auto International A B C System (http://www.autoint.com)
•Apply an oil rich product to stabilize the paints binder system (3M Imperial Hand Glaze) apply a thick coat and allow to dwell for 12-24 hours before buffing, repeat as necessary until surface has an ‘oily’ sheen.
•Remove residue and apply a Carnauba wax (Zymol Concourse)
•Try to keep vehicle paint surface away from UV heat radiation
•Keep paint surface waxed on a regular basis.

Thanks. Is this a project that can be completed by a first timer?

The Autoint website said store is closed, are there any other suppliers/products as an alternative?

WIth a PC (porter cable), proper pads and products...you would be amazed at the difference you can make in your paint...... Since guards red is a single stage paint, it is very easy to remove oxidation......plus your paint doesn't look that bad in the photo....

I like Lake country CCS pads.....& optimum products.....its what I use on my guards red original paint 928

What do you guys think about the Zymol Rouge wax? It is designed for red paints.

Rouge will be a good wax if that's the only car you're going to apply it on. I'm assuming your paint is single stage. In that case, rouge would be a great choice as it will add a bit of color to the paint. The most important step though is all the prep work. You must do a great job of removing all the oxidized paint by polishing. You will need a dual-action polisher for this one. Let me know if you want me to elaborate....
