mdrums,

I've have the UDM as I was thinking about carrying them but I don't really like it at all, it vibrates just like the PC does, has a bit more power but the body is bigger so I don't really like that I can't hold it like the PC.

Just my 2 cents sorry to make it more confusing for you.

You can use any pad with the Griot's and it's an excellent unit. Get the Menzerna Line of polishes though. The UDM has some issues with the motor and its on/off switch. I think it's fixed now. However, outside of autopia and autogeek, both having vested interest in the UDM, I haven't heard anything impressive that would make me drop my PC. My 2 cents.

1st...thanks for all nthe reply's! I do not feel I will have an issue with the weight or size of any buffer. I am 6'5" with big hands. I have an old all metal Black and Decker rotory that was my dad's from the mid 60's...it still works great! I use that to buff the boat without issues.

Maybe I will stick to the PC....not sure though I just do not want something underpowered.

That is what confuses me as everyone on the other sites say you can because the Griot's can not use the pads for a the PC or UDM

Read about that too. My luck is they would ship me the old unit with issues!

Yeah all I heard is the UDM is more powerful and does not bog down. I wondered if those sites had any reason to push 1 buffer over the other. It almost seems like those sites are all the same site and they produce the UDM!.
Thoughts?

Personally I went ahead and got a makita rotary...it does go down to 600rpm which is pretty slow.....since most waxes go on by hand, might as well have the power of the rotary to get the compounding-polishing done right.....

BUT I am thinking about getting a PC just for those jobs that don't need a rotary, but need a touch more than my arm....

ok throwing in another option is the Flex XC 3410VR

http://www.flexnorthamerica.com/XC3410VR.html

This is a machine that has more power than both and is an orbital...the cost is much more something like $299.

The only downfall is the unit comes with a backing plate that you can not switch so no 4 inch pads, just 6 or 6.5 inch ones.

if you don't have either yet and you plan on using the tool a lot my bet might be on the Flex. I'm thinking about added this to our store as soon as I can figure out a supplier that can sell them to me for a decent price.

Hi Phil, I iwll not be useing a machine much...it's just me and 2 cars. Probably the Ultimate Detailing Machine or the Griot's machine will work just fine. I just want to make the right decesion on this. Back to searching the websites!

I'd go with the griot's. You can use any pad; it's hook-and-loop. Get the menzerna polishes and enjoy. No need to lose sleep over this. If you don't like, just send it back.

Ordered the Griot's machine. A new thread over at Autopia just showed up and a few Ultimate Detailing Machines motors just crapped out. 1 guy showed a video on youtube of the problem!

congrats on your purchase. yes moe is right that you can use any 6 - 6.5 inch pad however you can't go smaller to a 4 or 5. no worries though enjoy your new purchase and let me know if you need help with the polishes.
