zymol makes a safe degreaser that's natural called Strik. Use it with a terry towel and some detail spray to rub the wax off. Then clean the area with detail spray and condition using zymol tyre. This works for me. Also, if you use a natural wax, you wouldn't get residue

Amazed that none of the 'pros' here know this one...
Old wax can be easily removed from plastic/rubber trim, by reactivating it with a little fresh wax, and then cleaning off with a nice MF cloth.
So just a tiny bit of new wax, on the end of your finger (covered by a cloth) is enough to reactivate the dried wax, which can then be easily removed with a MF cloth for a clean finnish.
Sounds crazy, but I had a car spray guy show me that trick, and it works.
No need for the peanut butter or other stuff at all.
