Default New PC....!!!

Being a new member and a recent '95 993...I have decided to attempt a detailing project!!! First will be my drive around truct...then the wife's Beetle and maybe the Midnight Blue 993 Baby....have followed some Anthony's detailing threads. I have ordered Optimum polish and was...but have run into problems trying to finding the Pads....Optimum homepage makes no link to thier Pads that Anthony mentions. Any help with locating or substitutes that can do the job???? Its hard to put that PC to the P-car....!!!!!

I know the feeling. I told my wife I was detailing her Ford Excursion for her....I didn't tell her it was because it was the guinea pig for the PC.
The result was amazing, and I was able to do the car in a weekend rather than a week by hand! She was thrilled and I was impressed.

Keep everything clean, grit/dirt is the real enemy.

A trick I was taught was to always keep a spray bottle of distilled water (no water spots) close at hand with a clean towel or two. Spray and wipe down the area you're about to work on and then when you're done working on it to keep down dirt/grit.
I also spray the car down with distilled water and wipe/clean before putting down any wax.

Porter Cable is an excellent random orbit buffer....it would be hard to ruin your paint with one of those....it would take some serious work to do it!

I used the PC for claying (fantastic) and polishing. Bought from Griots Garage. Simple.
I don't use the PC to apply/remove wax, as I enjoy that part by hand. I use Pinnacle Souveran, there is no problem with leaving white wax residue on trim (it won't) and it generates next to no wax dust.
(Yes, I know it's $70/can. But so is Castrol SRF brake fluid in my Cup car. There are some things I don't mind paying for)

Thanks for the compliment on the 996TT. She is the 'garage queen', currently has the top bunk bed in the garage. The 968 Cab is the 'garage princess', currently in the bottom bed.

As for sequence of events, I'm sure it's not perfect (Anthony is the expert), but FWIW:

1. Dawn dishwashing detergent wash (strips wax).
2. Rinse
3. Clay with PC (and by hand in the hard to reach areas)
4. Rinse.
5. Adhesive/Bug/Tar remover for any road tar, etc.
6. Rinse, then spray with distilled water and wipe.
7. Polish with PC (as necessary)
8. Rinse
9. Spray and wipe with distilled water (no water spots)
10. Wax by hand.
11. Ask yourself ...."do I want to drive it and get it dirty?"

Part #s from Griot's order paperwork from last time:
Orange Foam polishing pad for PC 10626 $10.95
Paint cleaning clay holding pad for PC 10631 $19.95
6" backing plate for PC 243409 $26.95 (PC part number 18001 6" hook and loop standard pad with 6 dust holes...replaces PN 16000 standard pad for 6" adhesive backed discs)
I use a Porter Cable 6" machine, P/N 7336.

I have a PC and clay bar. How do you use the PC to clay your car?

FWIW, this is what I used from GriotsGarage:
Paint cleaning clay holding pad for PC 10631 $19.95
6" backing plate for PC 243409 $26.95 (PC part number 18001 6" hook and loop standard pad with 6 dust holes...replaces PN 16000 standard pad for 6" adhesive backed discs)

I would definitely suggest sending a PM to Anthony in this forum for his professional opinion/advice as well.

________
lewis you got to speed things up. in one weekend, i would have done my two porsches, my sisters s2k,my wife's a6 avant and my S4 avant!!!!

i have two pc, one for putting wax on one to take off. change pads/pad covering often. i got about 60 of those things (covers) trust me, the more covers you got, the faster and better job you can do ;-)

IMHO claying with a pc is unnecessary and could result in swirl marks. I constantly check my clay bar while claying to make sure it hasn't picked up debris off the paint that may scratch. Clay is also abrasive using it a speed on a pc may remove more paint then by hand use.

I've never clayed with a PC-I didn't even know it could be done. I use meguiars softbuff pads from www.autodetailingsolutions.com
