Default Question for COBB

@COBB Tuning one question, the S model has a rough idle in comfort mode… this seems to be a pretty well known issue…very smooth idle in sport mode, but it’s known for idling rough in comfort mode… literally raising the idle slightly in RPMs in comfort mode removes the roughness…

..could your tune slightly adjust the idle in comfort mode to fix the rough idle?

side note, to everyone… I purchased this tune, haven’t flashed it yet onto my car, but working with @COBB Tuning has been excellent. The best customer service out there.

I've only noticed the rough idle when the engine is targeting a very low load and no accessories/air conditioning/etc are running. The ECU actually has a function to target just enough power to run these electrical systems. Our maps do make some changes to this behavior. However, the strategy of making "just enough power" is somewhat of an emissions strategy to run the engine as slowly as it can to get by at idle. We kept the general spirit of this strategy with some alterations. Admittedly, during soak, our Cayennes have operated almost exclusively with higher idle loads due to the need for A/C and heated or cooled seats. The weather in Austin this year has alternated aggressively between "hot enough to melt the hat on your head" and "cold enough to see ice on the ground and not in my tea". We're continuing to soak and drive the cars for more data and any feedback from customers would be highly appreciated! Anything to help improve our maps is always welcome!

Cayenne Base Power Gains

Included on the Accessport are two different versions of our Stage 1 Off The Shelf (OTS) Map. One is meant for use with 91 octane fuel, and the other with 93 octane fuel. The 93 map uses a higher boost ceiling which allows for better low end torque but the single turbocharger can't efficiently hold that boost all the way through the gear so it drops at higher RPM. The 91 map uses a lower boost ceiling to control knock but this lower boost is more sustainable and the turbo can hold it a little longer. At the top of the gear, both maps are targeting the same boost but some runs can see slightly higher boost on the map that is less aggressive down low.

Cayenne S Power Gains

Porsche's newer 2.9L Twin Turbo V6 powerplant responds very well to tuning! Our Stage1 tuning files produce a power band that is significantly smoother than stock while achieving significant increases to power under the curve. After touching right at 450 lb-ft of torque on 93 octane, we are able to carry impressive gains all of the way to the top of the power band.

Been looking for a tune for my wife's base 2021 for a while.

I saw a review on the COBB website that makes me wonder if the tune works properly with the transmission.

Do you have any comment on the below:

I bought and installed 93 octane map. Immediately after driving the acceleration was really good but when decelerating the transmission would slam into 2nd and 1st gear causing a loud thunk and unsettling the vehicle when coming to a stop or slow down. I immediately uninstalled and am waiting on a reply from flat 6 Motorsports if they have a fix in mind.

Impressive. Current Cobb customer. I use a Cobb Stage 3 map on my GT-R.

Substantial gains over stock for the S. This warning is surprising "Baseline on 91 octane was not possible without significant knock and timing correction". Could you explain this further? Are you saying the stock map is garbage and doesn't handle 91? I'm in Canada, so our 94 octane at the pump is never as good as advertised. Is it fair to infer that the Stage 1 91 map offers better knock protection than stock when running Canada Mobil1 94?

Rather than disabling the Stop/Start system, would you consider restoring its last state when the vehicle is started? Same with the Sport mode setting? Thread the needle on the legal/regulatory risk...

Curious about the transmission downshift issue as well. Is there any ZF transmission tuning in the Cobb talent pool?

This is something we've seen consistently after any reflash of the car. There is a measure of learning that the ECU undergoes regarding shift behavior. The actual shift schedule is set firmly but the actual shifting actions are variable and designed to adjust in order to keep shifts smooth. Unfortunately, this learned data is erased on a reflash/reset so the car needs more driving in order to begin adjusting and build back up the learned data. Realistically, the shifting smooths out back to normal levels after about a week of regular driving. I've only personally found it "disruptive" by any means for the first day.

On the note of fuel, we were surprised when the car came with a gas cap label specifying 93AKI/98RON rather than the normal 91/95. I have seen regular knock adjustments when running the stock map, even with 93 octane fuel. It's likely due to the engine packaging (Hot V) which can easily heat soak the engine and increase knock potential. With that said, the knock management system of the car is very responsive and can pretty quickly make any needed timing changes. I suspect Porsche is of how the car will respond to lower quality fuel and trusts their system to adjust accordingly. When tuning for 91/95 specifically, we took precise care to minimize knock. This including running it on the dyno without any fans/cooling to exacerbate the heat soak and really torture test the engine. In the end, we got a great calibration that we think is absolutely safe for use with some lower grade fuel.

We don't plan on changing the Auto On/Off system at all. Some models definitely do revert to the last used mode while others default to Normal each key cycle. Emissions testing is typically completed with the car in whatever drive mode it starts in by default in addition to in the most aggressive drive mode across various tests. Leaving the OEM mode operation alone is a strong factor in ensuring our OTS maps pass all testing. There are some things that could be considered "threading the needle" and we have to decide what is worth it and what is feasible.

Regarding transmission tuning on these cars, it is absolutely something we're interested in! Given how widely used these are across the Porsche/Audi/VW lineup, I think it may be an eventuality but it really comes down to what we have time for. Tuning the transmission on these wouldn't offer the same level of adjustability that we get on the true PDK cars but it could still be a definite improvement. You'll just need to stay tuned to see what may come!

I have a B9 S4, which uses the same ZF8 platform. IMO, the ZF8 can benefit way more from a transmission tune. It’s very sloppy from the factory. My S4 has the 034 Stage 2 TCU and it completely changed the behavior of the car. Shift speeds are probably 3X as fast and much more planted. I am stuck between JB4, APR, and Cobb, but a TCU tune would make the decision very easy, as nobody has transmission tuning for the Porsche ZF8s.

While I'm a COBB fan ('13 991S with manual and custom tune), why would the transmission downshifting be abrupt when its not that way when you pick up the car new?
Am I wrong to assume that the factory programming for the transmission is erased (including the shift schedule - even though its "set firmly") when this tune is installed on the Cayenne?

Well hopefully we can make that decision easy for you. No guarantees but I do agree with your thoughts on it.

The car has been driven very lightly off the factory floor and during transit to the dealership. I imagine this very slow, cautious driving in transportation mode may prime the learned data. I'm not certain as we haven't messed with transportation mode before but it's a strong possibility in my mind. Regardless, the full factory programming is not erased on a flash, just learned data aka the information it gathers and uses to make adjustments to the factory calibration similar to how fuel trims work on the engine. We've observed this behavior on a simple reset procedure without any programming changes.

We've had the Cobb on my wife's base Cayenne for months. I really enjoy the added power/torque. It's basically like upgrading to the S in terms of power/feel. We've found the Cayenne transmission (and newer Panamera) to be a little unsmooth from the factory. I don't notice anything different after the tune. Our Cayenne always had that kickdown into second approaching a stop sign that sort of lurched the car forward slightly. I did have another tune on the vehicle prior but like the power delivery of the Cobb tune better. Overall the car is very smooth but Porsche makes the transmission a little lazier with the torque converter versus the PDK stuff. Cobb has always done top notch work on Porsche vehicles.

Here were our dyno results, really stout.

In the "Normal" setting the throttle is very lazy with the stock tune on the base 9Y0. Simply trying to take off normally from a stop sign/light also has a delay, unless you goose it, even with auto stop off. Does this tune adjust anything with the feeling of the throttle?
