Default S vs GTS

I have a 2017 CS, 31,000 miles , nicely optioned , heated/cooled seats, adaptive cruise, pano roof, PDLS, hitch, roof rails, BOSE, black with black/tan interior. Love the truck. Transfer case replaced last summer. I had a loner 2021 base cayenne for a week . I hated the new dash layout , plus the base was sloooooow. I told my wife that if I ever sold this I would not get a 2019+ because of the dash layout and lack of buttons.
I'm always looking. Found a 2018 GTS with all the same options plus air! I keep hearing how nice air ride is but I've never been in one. Is the air ride worth it?

My previous diesel was steel springs. It looks like the 17 S and 18 GTS have same 3.6 twin turbo but GTS has 40 more horsepower? I haven't talked to dealer yet, just found it online tonight.

Yes.

And if you tow, yes.

And if you don't tow, yes.

Air was a mandatory option when i was searching for an S.

That having been said, moving up a couple of years to a more powerful car has its separate allure.

And Carplay.

Are you sure about that? The GTS gets 390mm brakes from the Turbo S. I'd be surprised if they put those on the S as well.

The GTS is awesome. I’m not crazy for the body kit, but everything else is spot on.

Correct. The base and S share the same 360mm brake rotor size. Turbo has 390mm front rotors. Turbo S has PCCB's.

GTS shares same engine as S (with a mild tune), but has Turbo air suspension, Brake caliper/rotor, body kit, and full leather interior. The S can be optioned with all of those things (except brakes and body kit) but is rare to find with them.

Depends what you want. I parked by a GTS the other day and gave it and my S a good look. The GTS looked a little lower and bigger tires means less wheel well clearance. Neither works for me as I drive in the snow a lot in the winter months.

Not saying you're wrong about the 958 being more desirable than the 9Y0(?) but as far as 0-60's go they aren't that far off. Your 2017 CS is 5.2s, the 2021 base is 5.6 to 5.9 (faster w/ sport chrono). That half a second is not a little but its not a lot. I'm guessing the 2021 is just more disconnected from the road and thus feels "slower".

On the button front, I agree. Buttons are nice.

Just fyi, car and driver real world 0-60 test had a 958 cayenne S do it in 5.4, and a 9y0 base cayenne in 4.9. I’ve driven both, and the 9y0 subjectively feels faster. Blame the outdated aisin transmission in the 958 vs the new ZF for that one.

Don't forget it also comes with a factory drop (around 1.5" I believe) and sport exhaust.

I have a 2014 S and my local dealership loaners are either base Macans or Cayennes. I have had the 2023 base Cayenne as a loaner and I am sure it is quicker than my v8 S. I just hate the haptic controls and stupid gear shift. I found myself trying to leave it in drive or reverse often when I was trying for PARK.

Despite having less HP and torque on paper, I bet the 2023 felt faster because its max torque arrives at 1340 RPM, vs. the 2014 which has to wait till 3500 RPM for its max torque. Turbos are nice that way!

That.. and also because Porsche under reported the 2019+ base cayenne hp/tq figures. APR put one on a dyno and it's advertised hp is actually what it's making at the wheels, not at the crank. Factor in about 20% drivetrain loses and you're looking at around 400hp at the crank. Coupled with a much quicker shifting ZF 8sp gearbox, and it's a pretty quick SUV for a base model. I agree though, not a fan of all the haptic switchgear.
