Default Best year for 958.1 and best motor? I'm looking at '14 model S non turbo v-8

This will be my first Cayenne and my first Porsche. I'm retired, driven several Bimmers, Lexus GX, Toyota 4-Runner, Highlander, Suburban...42 years in sales, I got around and generally bought all my cars used, directly from the original owner and from Phoenix or Tucson. I'm drawn to performance cars because I just love to drive. If there's a best model, best motor for the 958.1, I'd like to hear from you guys. The car I'm looking at is a one owner and a desert car. It has about 64K miles, perfect service record. The dealer did just replace the valve cover gaskets to ready the car for retail. In a previous service, the manifold was removed, new gasket at only 4K miles. This indicates a coolant leak to me...to access the coolant system tubing but at such low milage? Anyways, comments would be welcome. I've got the fever, ha.

Early 958.1 V8s had issues with aluminum camshaft bolts shearing, causing catastrophic engine failure. Not an issue by 2014; check if manufacturer recall/repair done if looking at 2011-12.

Coolant pipes were glued in place in 958.1 V8s and there have been failures. Repair involves swapping out glued parts with bolted ones. Perhaps this was done on one you're looking at?

Other than those things, 958.1 V8s are pretty solid. If I were looking at a high(er) mileage used vehicle of any brand, I'd probably choose a non-turbo over a turbo, simply because there are fewer things to break. That being said, i haven't heard of too many issues with 958.1 turbos. GTS is probably trim I'd look for, but a nicely optioned S can be very close to a GTS.

No knowledge of base model V6 or diesels (mine is Turbo S so I don't follow issues with those models). Transfer case failures can happen across most of the 958.1 trims, though i think not so much with diesels. 10 year warranty added by Porsche on them.

Used to be a stickie thread something like "What to look for when buying a used Cayenne". Search is your friend.

Welcome to the family and “fever!”

First: Having similar (including the legendary 6.9) stables as yours, Porsche is not in those circles. It is a far, far superior piece of craftsmanship. With a DNA to boot. Truly.

However, unless you have a patient and very knowledgeable indy, Porsche dealership service prices are astronomical. ~$862 for a simple oil service. But they provide leather couches, widescreen TVs, Starbucks cappuccino, and eye-candy.

Again, welcome to the family! Ask all the questions, this forum and moderator (s) are first class!

A 2014 is still a 10-year old Cayenne - it will need lots of things fixed regardless of the mileage. Regardless of the year, these are maintenance heavy vehicles to own, which isn't a big deal if you enjoy working on them... but not if you're paying $300/hr for someone else.

Don't rule out turbos with good maintenance history.
Recently picked up a 14 Turbo S and am extremely happy with the purchase!

I got a Cayenne S V8 2013...put in a miltek exhaust and a tune by FVD and it rocks....the air suspension was leaking so we had to fix that.
Other than that and a weird noise which comes from the rear its a great car to drive.

Do you have PTV Plus (rare on an S, but possible)? They tend to "crunch" in low speed turns as they wear out.

Overall a 2011 will be the same as a 2014 regarding aging out of parts: Low miles really just means it is not likely to have as many missed services. But it still has all the same door latches, plastic coolant fittings, suspension bits, that age out. If it was a desert car stored outside, be sure the headliner isn't drooping.

FWIW I have owned a 2011 Cayenne S (NA 4.8 V8). I bought it with 40K miles on it in 2015 and purchased a warranty that lasted until 125K. Total cost of the car, warranty and tax and lic was just under $50K. Now the car has 173K miles on it. It has been great. I did have some warranty work done around 118 K that included a lot of little stuff involved in fixing a small oil leak and a new starter. Mainly stuff my dealer made sure to correct before the warranty expired at 125K. Was problem free until 160K miles at which time I got a cam shaft sensor code but it turned out to need the timing chain rails replaced. $8700. Still runs great and considering I what I paid and have gotten 8 years and 133K miles, and its still looks and runs great, I have been very pleased. I have loved the vehicle so much I was going to buy another new one either a turbo or GTS as I prefer the V-8 in a SUV but it runs so well I am keeping it as my beach/ surfing / bad weather /and hauling cargo vehicle. I will start limiting the mileage to make it last as it is the Porsche I need, and instead used my car budget for the Porsche I really wanted. Together they make a perfect combination for fun and practicality.

@Scratch I’ve had a base and a diesel. I’ve had BMW, Lexus, Mercedes SUV’s and cars from those brands and more. Without question, my 2014 Cayenne Diesel is the best of pack by a long shot (seconded by my wife). Handling, comfort, power to spare, 700 mile range, 30 mpg. Tows almost anything. A road warrior and reliable to a fault. Looks as good as new. 113k miles now and under the hood it’s entirely original save a serpentine belt and filters. Not a drop of oil leak top or bottom. We will likely never replace it. Maintenance at Porsche can be expensive, but if you change your own oil (it’s easy) there’s really not much else to do to the diesel. Just get in and drive.
