Default Warranty Service Loaner Question

I took my CD in for some warranty work and they were supposedly out of Porsche loaners so they rented a Jetta from a local car rental place.

I don’t mean to be a whiny ***** complaining about my first world problems but part of the reason I paid a premium for my car and part of the reason Porsches command a high resale price while still under factory warranty is because of access to Porsche loaners while the car is in for service. The loaner is paid for by PNA so it’s not an issue of cost to the dealer even though I purchased the car from a third party.

Theres no telling how long the car will be in for. If they decide to pull the engine to replace the timing chain tensioner or a valve lifter it might be a while. Am I out of line to ask for a Porsche loaner when one becomes available?

Do you think service and associated “perks” are of a lesser quality when you didn’t purchase the car from the dealer? My dad who was a Porsche salesman and a service writer back in the 70’s and 80’s says they are but given that PNA is paying and the hope that my next (and it very well may be) purchase of a Porsche is made at a dealer I would think my satisfaction with the quality of service would be of utmost concern.

What do you think?

thanks

Eric

eh, does it really matter? I get its not a "premium" loaner, but really if its clean, fairly new, and reliable, I don't care much.

Nothing wrong with asking for a porsche loaner when it becomes available, but if they say no, I wouldn't be too upset.

bring your SA / mechanics a box of donuts and/or bottle of wine next time
develop a relationship with your SA, find out what they really like...

Each dealer has a fixed number of quality loaners. In my case the SA will only schedule an appointment when he has a Porsche loaner available. In emergencies a customer will be relegated to a nearby car rental for their ride home.

I didn't purchase my CD from my local dealer and I was still treated as a regular customer when it came time for maintenance. They did wait to schedule my appointment when they did have a Porsche loaner available.

I'd say at least they provided you with some sort of wheels while you're in for service. If they're going to keep it for an extended period, ask to see if they can swap out your current loaner for a Porsche one.

Where did you hear PNA pays for the Porsche loaners? Those are dealership cars, sold to and registered to the dealership, insured and maintained by the dealership, and eventually sold (usually as CPO) as used cars when the loaner use is no longer feasible. PNA may ask the dealership to have ## number of Porsche loaners, and they can enforce that a bit by allotments of popular/high-profit models, but I can assure you - they don't pay for the loaners.

My dealer couldn’t get me in for 5 weeks for a loaner - and 4 weeks if I didn’t need a car. I was lucky that it wasn’t a critical issue but I think that is still unacceptable. Not impressed overall with the service side of the dealer - cost, time, efficiency, or scheduling. About he only thing they are on top of is asking me to fill out the survey with all tens - that they have down cold. They could take a serious lesson from Lexus on service.

I had variable results with service until I got to know my SA after a really unfortunate mess up - on his part. Since than, things have been great and he gets it right every time.

Get to know your SA!

You're driving a vehicle and tagging miles on a car that you don't have to pay for? Don't whine. You're SA will thinkg you're being a Pri*k.

You Porsche loaner will come when it's your time.

Dealers have limited numbers of loaners - just the way it is. I have never had a problem getting a Porsche or Audi loaner as long I am willing to wait 2-3 weeks, which is usually not an issue for non-emergency work. I have heard others mention buying beer or other trinkets for their service advisor however I have never been a fan, as personally I would be insulted if someone tried that on me. YMMV.

My local dealer maintains a large loaner fleet that includes over 50 Porsches, mostly Macans. As a former service advisor (not Porsche) we always appreciated gifts from the customers. You may be surprised at how much customers brought in for us.

pretty sad you have to bribe your service advisor (i.e. sales person) to get decent service when you're paying $160+ an hour. Just another great reminder why I'm glad I never go dealers

Guess it depends on what you’re taking your car in for. Something the dealer is going to make a decent amount of money on?

I have had the opposite experience. I bought my 2013 Diesel one year ago. It has been at the dealer 4 months out of that time. One three month stint (for the rear oil leak) and a few one weekish stints. I've had a loaner each time (so for four months out of last year). For two months they had me in a Panamera Gran Turismo 4S (amazing vehicle). Like anything, it depends on the dealer and how many dealers are around. I have 6 Porsche dealerships within a 50 mile drive and 3 within a 20 mile drive, so I think the competition is pretty stiff to keep their customers happy.

Dellenberger is right. The dealers own the loaners, pay for them and all the associated costs with owning the vehicle. Due to the price I pay for dealer maintenance vs indy maintenance, I expect a loaner as part of what I am paying for. When I am paying $400 for an oil change, and I can't wait for it, because they schedule it in a way that I can't pick up my car until the end of the day, I expect a loaner. Also, it's fun to drive something different. My wife's Panamera is in the shop now.....has been for five days, and it won't be ready until Tuesday (thank goodness that finally found the problem, and they are waiting for a part). They loaned her a Macan S. I had my 4 year/40,000 mile service yesterday, and they loaned me a Macan. I even asked the SA if I could swap with my wife, and he said no problem. Like others on this thread, the dealer loaner fleet is limited, so if I want a loaner I usually have to wait. I appreciate the suggestions about a thank you gift to my SA. In my case, it's a great SA. The other two SA's have been less than fantastic, but the new one is great. He has been a tech, so he knows about the technical/mechanical things. His attitude is good. He told me he wants to buy my CD when I get ready to sell it. It's a pity that I am selling it now....although I have mixed feelings. A good SA makes a world of difference.
